Fiber cement siding is the best siding to install over stucco because it offers many of the same benefits for homes where stucco is common, including fire resistance, insect resistance, and good insulation. Fiber cement siding is also rigid, so it won’t warp over time like vinyl siding might if installed over furring strips.

Vinyl is the most common shingle siding due to its rigid PVC design, longevity, affordability, and ease of installation. Mildew grows into porous wood, making it more difficult to remove than regular dirt (and more destructive). It’s possible to install vinyl siding over stucco, and if the stucco is in decent condition, it’s unlikely you’ll run into any issues. However, if you see water damage or mold growth on your stucco, or you have ongoing problems with your EIFS siding, including leaks, it’s best to remove the stucco first. This will reduce the risk of mold growth and pest infestation, allowing your pro to access and replace any damaged sheathing.
