"Very dependable & great work over the last two years since we started a landscape remodeling job. Tore out all of the 50 plus years old shrubs. Consulted with previous business owner to redesigned & installed a nice variety of plants to compliment my home and to be deer resistant. Job included new border, washed rock, and top soil with seed. Grass has never been greener in those areas. Also made suggestions in the final designed which worked great. We are currently adding an addition to our home & already consulting Derek about the landscaping. Definitely highly recommended."

Lawn Care questions, answered by experts

No, carpetgrass and St. Augustine grass are two different species. However this is a very common misconception and you may even find St. Augustine grass is mislabeled as carpetgrass. Carpetgrass does not have as much shade tolerance as St. Augustine grass, and has narrower blades with an alternating pattern (while St. Augustine grass has an opposite pattern). St. Augustine grass doesn’t have the weedy, high seedheads that carpetgrass produces.

Herbicide application, manual removal, and landscape fabric are common approaches.

You can leave grass clippings on the lawn, depending on their length. You don’t want to completely cover new grass and block it from sunlight, or encourage moss crowd out the more delicate grass. However, short clippings are usually fine to leave on the lawn. In some cases, they can be beneficial: Clippings can be a source of fertilizer and help protect the ground as young grass blades develop.

There are tools known as “sprinkler donuts” that are specially designed to aid in cutting the grass around your sprinkler heads by protecting them from your mower or weed whacker. You can also use a pair of hand shears to do the job manually if you’re willing to get a little dirty.

Lawn mower blades should be sharp enough that you can feel the sharpened edge, but not sharp enough to cut you when you touch them. Over-sharpening blades to a fine, razor-edge poses a safety risk and decreases the blade's life because it causes extra wear; the thinner edge is sharper but weaker and will require more frequent sharpening.
