Shingle granules can be cleaned out of gutters using a small scoop or a hose, depending on the quantity of granules and how much other debris is in your gutters. First, clear your gutters of leaves and other debris. This may remove granules in the gutters if they are mixed in with the debris. When connecting a gutter to a downspout, make sure that both have the same outlet capacity. Meaning starting from your gutter and moving downwards, the diameter should match so you have a secure seal. Make sure you’re working downwards when attaching the pipes (for example, the gutter fits inside the downspout) as doing the reverse will cause leaks.

It’s best to schedule regular gutter cleanings before there’s a major issue, but sometimes life gets in the way. Luckily, a few telltale signs will let you know when to clean your gutters ASAP:

  • You notice built-up debris in your gutters.

  • Your gutters overflow with water when it rains.

  • Water doesn’t readily flow from your downspouts.

  • Your gutters are damaged or visibly leaking.

  • You notice evidence of leaking along your roof, siding, yard, or pavement.

  • Your gutters have pulled away from your roofing or exterior walls.
