In most cases, the money you’ll spend on concrete disposal is well worth the investment. Concrete is heavy and often bulky, so moving it manually can be dangerous and time-consuming. For concrete that’s under 3 inches thick, use a crowbar or a wrecking tool like a sledgehammer to pry the concrete, starting at the corners and working toward the center. You’ll need a jackhammer to break up concrete that’s over 3 inches thick. Do your homework if you use a jackhammer; you’ll need full protective gear that includes a hard hat, safety goggles, and steel-toed boots.

Some homeowners have luck using pressure washers, but this only works for old or weaker concrete sealants and with very powerful pressure washers. You’ll get better results by pressure washing water-based sealants. However, it’s worth trying on any sealant if you’re hoping for the least toxic, least expensive, and most DIY-friendly option. To try this method, rent or buy the most powerful pressure washer you can find and take several passes at the concrete, completely pressure washing the entire area. You may need to repeat the process multiple times to see results.

Concrete disposal costs between $0.50 and $2 per square foot of concrete in most cases, but the price can fall outside of that range depending on a few factors. Some of the most important cost factors include the following:

  • Amount of concrete you need hauled away

  • Distance from a proper dump site

  • Whether or not your old concrete can be recycled

  • Add-on services, like concrete demolition and site prep

  • Local dumping costs

Removing fence posts that are set in concrete is something you can't do by hand. You will need an excavator, a strong post-puller, or a jackhammer. If you plan on recycling the concrete base, you may be able to cut the post out with a jackhammer and then set the new post in the existing base. However, it's usually better to remove both the fence post and concrete together. Due to the weight of concrete, you will need a hydraulic removal tool.
