I like small jobs just as much as big jobs, because they allows me to keep my schedule flexible. I have a double-major in mechanical and industrial engineering, plus continuing education in industrial electronics. I have four U.S. Patents on construction equipment, and I worked as an equipment designer for eleven years. On my crew I have a licensed electrician, plumber, master mason, and lots of experienced woodworkers.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

If you used regular jointing sand, you can typically walk on the repaired area right away. If you used polymeric sand, wait at least 24 hours before walking on it and 48 to 72 hours before driving over it, depending on the weather. Polymeric sand needs time to fully cure and lock the pavers in place.

Regular inspections, cleaning, and sealing wood components prevent premature wear and structural damage.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Similar to how you would care for turf in the yard, you’ll need to make sure you’re staying on top of your deck grass by picking up debris, cleaning up spills as soon as they happen, and giving your turf a monthly brushing with a medium bristle brush to keep it from flattening

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.
