"Reliant Electric serviced my Generac backup generator when it started running continuously even when grid power was working. Nate spent about an hour on a snowy day diagnosing the problem which turned out not to be the “usual” cause, a blown fuse. In the end, he determined that there was a short in the underground control wire but recommended that we wait at least a month for any frozen water in the conduit to thaw before fishing a new wire. He set the generator up so I could start it manually in case of an outage. He returned about six weeks later when the ground was thoroughly thawed and replaced the wire. Sure enough, the old wire had been damaged probably from years of sitting in water and freeze/thaw cycles. He replaced it with a heavier gauge wire and gave me some suggestions for drilling a drain hole in the conduit. He tested the generator to make sure it would start in a power outage and also checked the plugs and valve clearance while he was there just to be certain everything was in good shape. Nate was neat, friendly, informative, completely professional, and most importantly, highly skilled. Reliant is a bit pricey, but for this type of work it pays to have someone with years of experience who was able to diagnose the problem correctly and fix it right the first time."

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more. 

If you have a transfer switch properly installed, the generator and main electrical power cannot feed the system at the same time. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. A home that is 2,500 square feet will likely need a 20kW to 25kW generator. Consult your local generator installer to confirm the generator size needed to power your home before purchasing a new one. Be sure to consider how much power your necessary devices need to run.

When properly maintained, natural gas generators can last a long time, as much as 20 to 40 years. They have relatively few needs compared to generators with other fuel types. However, the generator’s lifespan ultimately depends on how often the generator is used and for how long it’s left running.

If your home already has a grinder pump and you’re still noticing issues (like frequently clogged toilets and sinks), it could be time to upgrade your grinder pump. Start by checking your existing horsepower. If there are four or fewer people living in your home, using a 1/2-horsepower grinder pump should be sufficient. Larger households should consider investing in a 1-horsepower grinder pump to maximize wastewater removal efforts.
