Instead, we recommend pouring hot water over the frozen area or using a less intense heat source, like a hair dryer or space heater.

However, it will only work across a small area, after which there’s a chance the water will freeze again. The sudden clash of temperatures is dangerous for fragile materials, notably windows and other glass, so you’ll want to keep the water away from your car.

In most cases, it is best to leave icicles on your roof and allow them to melt naturally. You should only consider removing them if they are heavy enough to cause damage to your home or pose a risk to people below. Since removing icicles can be dangerous, it is recommended to hire a professional for the job if you have immediate concerns.
