"They did an excellent job, were very efficient, very professional and did excellent on clean up. I am terrible with making decisions but they were very patient and helpful in choosing the flooring. The finished product is beautiful. I would highly recommend them and I would definitely hire them again."

Custom Upholstering and Total Restorations has been a family run business for nearly 40 years and maintains a long standing tradition based on training, inherited skill, and experience. Custom Upholstering and Total Restorations offers furniture repair, refinish, and restoration with an emphasis on antiques. Lawrence Andes, proprietor, his son, Craig, and two long-term employees, Gene Hensley and Gina Krytusa, expanded the association through providing window treatments, bedding, slipcovers, and other soft furnishings for the home. With the many services we offer we have developed the rich blend of traditional services customers enjoy today.

"At the end of July they agreed to make valances for my kitchen. I gave them over $300 worth of material in August and a check on August 18th, 2022. The check was cashed on December 5, 2022 and I have not seen my valance, the material or my money since. They have not returned my calls and the business is closed each time I go there. If they are not crooks I would like them to explain what kind of humans they are."

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

Paper moving pads, also called furniture wrapping paper or paper moving blankets, are sheets of recycled paper used to protect various items during moving. Similar to traditional moving blankets, paper pads are also reusable, making them a sustainable and cost-effective option for protecting your belongings during the moving process. Although they’re recycled, they still provide excellent protection against dust, dirt, and scratches.

In most cases, it is more affordable to reupholster furniture than it is to replace it, but it depends on the quality and age of the furniture you’re considering getting reupholstered. Antique pieces are always worth reupholstering, as it’s the only way to preserve the piece and extend its life. Newer pieces of furniture are more often made using lower-quality materials like medium-density fiberboard or plywood that don’t have the same lifespan as things like hardwood. For newer pieces, your furniture reupholstery specialist should be able to help you determine the best course of action.

Interior and exterior door openings are typically 80 inches high, with openings 29¼ inches wide for interior doors and 35 inches wide for exterior doors. If your couch is smaller than these measurements, it should fit through the door frame.

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

The average time it takes to reupholster a piece of furniture is around eight hours, but it varies significantly based on the piece. A professional can usually reupholster smaller furniture units like dining chairs or small ottomans in two to three hours, while an entire sofa might take several days or up to a week. Antique furniture tends to take longer to reupholster because greater care needs to be taken to preserve the piece. Your timeline might be a bit longer if you need other repairs done, like sanding and refinishing wood components.
