"For years, I’ve had a variable odor in my basement that several licensed plumbers failed to diagnose correctly or at all. Their assessments ranged from "can't smell it" to "possible sewer gas." One plumber taped the open areas of the floor drain housing the hoses the water softener & Rinnai, while others recommended pouring vinegar & water down it. Another dismissed the musty smell from my tankless water heater's exterior intake/exhaust duct as “simple moisture.” Thankfully, Cody Carroll of Piping Hot Plumbing came for a separate job. The moment he walked past my tankless water heater, he immediately recognized the odor: a dangerous propane leak. He instantly shut down the system, explaining the serious safety hazard.
