Small jobs welcome

"I had many companies come out and give me a quote on removing and replacing my deck. Everybody s prices were sky high and were booked way out. I was recommended to Gregory the owner of handiest of men and he gave me a much better quote and was very fast on his turn around. I couldn t be happier with the job he has done for me! They were very professional and did a great quality of work. I d recommend him to anybody."

"Dealing with EPC Construction (Robert) has been a great experience. Beginning with the onsite estimate on a Saturday to accommodate our schedule, the sharing of professional / personal recommendations and photos. Resulting in an old wooden deck being removed and replaced with a larger composite deck and awning. Scheduling and work were completed in a timely manner. Robert takes PRIDE in his work. Highly recommend."

"The job took longer than they said, but there were product shotrages and they stayed with it and did what they could with what they had. Good craftmanship, very friendly, but did not clean up like I thought they should, but I am picky. Great value, I would hire again!"

Awnings questions, answered by experts

The average cost to build a pergola ranges from $2,200 to $6,400, whereas the average cost of an awning ranges from $1,400 to $4,400, meaning that an awning tends to be less expensive to build or install than a pergola. Ultimately, the less expensive option depends on a few factors, including size, quality of materials used, and location.

To ensure the installation process goes smoothly, it's wise to ask a potential pro several questions. Key topics to cover include:

  • Licensing and Insurance: Do you have a professional license and insurance to perform this work? This is crucial as installing an awning into a home's exterior can be a complex job.

  • Cost Estimate: What was the price of similar jobs you've completed? Awning installation costs can vary based on size, design, and location, so this helps establish a general price range.

  • Project Timeline: How long will this project take to complete? Getting an estimated timeline provides peace of mind, even though unforeseen hurdles can occur.

  • Building Permits: Will I need a building permit for this project, and who is responsible for obtaining it? An experienced local contractor will be knowledgeable about local rules and regulations.

  • References and Portfolio: Do you have references from previous clients or photos of completed projects? Speaking with past clients and seeing previous work can give you insight into their experience and the quality of their work.

It’s not a good idea to allow heavy rain to fall on your awning, as puddling can occur and overload the awning. Your awning should be able to handle a light rain, though you should allow it to dry out before retracting it or open it to dry as soon as the rain stops. As always, consult manufacturer guidelines for using and caring for your awning.

Fabric awnings provide shade, reduce energy costs, and enhance outdoor aesthetics.

Yes, you can convert a fabric awning to a metal one. You just need to swap the fabric for metal panels, which are more durable and weather-resistant. However, the support frame will probably need reinforcement to handle the added weight. You should consult a pro to address any structural concerns.
