We truly appreciate you coming out in the middle of the night and taking care of everything, including drying the area, removing and cleaning the carpet, and fixing the doorknobs. "Lois Diaz with GM Handyman did a fantastic job refinishing our front door and the wood framing the side windows. He was careful and thorough and communicated clearly about steps involved in the process. I will hire him again and recommend his services to friends."

"They framed the outside wall of a carport and then installed they outside metal corrugated sheeting and did an excellent job. It looks terrific and keeps th snow off the equipment. They sent me photos during the construction and discussed the detail with me."

"I hired Webb Premier Builders for two different projects. The first was for finish work and a large closet design/build. It added great value when it was put up for sale. The second was for a 400sq.ft. deck that was being built by another contractor and was a mess from the start. I called Bill hoping that he was available to look at the work that was being done for me. He came over to look at the project and was direct and honest about how badly the deck was being built. So I fired the original Contracter and hired Webb Premier Builders right away. They started from scratch and made my deck safe and to code for my family and friends. Only reason I didnâ t hire them for the job to begin with was because they were booked and I was anxious to get it done. I should of watered. Iâ m grateful for their integrity which is very rare this day and age. I highly recommend them to others and will hire them to do more near future jobs. Great group of guys."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Local building codes don’t specify the number of steps a deck can have before a railing is required, mainly because stair height varies widely. Most areas require decks 30 inches or higher to have a railing. While not exact, that roughly equates to four to seven steps.

To flatten a cupped deck board, start by ensuring it’s dry. Then, try flipping the board over so the cupped side faces down and reattach it. If that’s not possible, you can use screws to pull it tighter to the joists or plane the edges slightly to reduce the cup. It’s best to replace severely cupped boards.

It is possible to build your own deck, but it’s typically better to leave the work to a decking professional. Decks can be exceptionally complicated, especially if you want a wrap-around or second-story deck, and you don’t want to risk making an expensive or dangerous mistake. It’s usually better to hire a decking pro who can pull permits and build a structurally sound deck that will last for decades and provide the maximum return on investment.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Yes, it is possible to build a small, basic deck for $5,000, particularly if you use less expensive materials and a simple design. To stay within this budget, consider a size under 10x12 feet and use affordable materials like pressure-treated wood or cedar. While the general cost for deck building ranges from $4,350 to $12,560, with an average around $8,200, some projects can be completed for as little as $4,350. You can also save on labor costs by doing the work yourself, but be aware that mistakes could end up costing more than hiring a professional. A contractor may have a higher upfront cost, but they can ensure a safe, stable deck that will last.
