Thieves can open almost anything with enough time and the right tools, but they also prefer easy targets that are unlikely to get them caught. Forcing open gates is loud and difficult, and to be able to open one electronically requires extensive knowledge of the system, which most thieves don't have. Electric and other security gates are great deterrents because the thief will move to an easier target. If the thief is determined to enter your property, they will most likely find a different entrance point.

Double gates come with the same gaps as single gates, with hinges taking up a quarter of an inch of space. The difference is that double fence gates also have a center gap, which needs a little more clearance. Space the center gap at half an inch instead of the usual three-eighths of an inch for a single gate. 

This largely depends on the layout of your property and your preferred walking route to various entryways. Take your time figuring out the perfect spot for the gate to avoid difficulties later on. With all this said, the best place to put a gate is an area free from obstructions that offer the shortest route to your house.

Electric gates can be forced open if someone applies enough force to the edge furthest from the mounting bracket. You can reduce this risk by adding an electric lock to your gate opener. However, automatic gate openers generally help deter intruders, especially when paired with outdoor lighting and security cameras. Other home security tips include trimming trees surrounding the area for added visibility and installing motion sensors in your yard.
