"Parley was a topnotch professional. He arrived when he said he would, gave a quote and we settled on a fair price. We were impressed that he showed up ready to work, worked so hard every day and the driveway looks 100% better. Parley takes pride in his work and the fact that he cleaned up the work area so well was a major plus. I recommend Ironclad with the highest of marks. Jane and Jeff"

"Richard Dockstader was the one we worked through. He was fantastic. Showed up on time as promised, kept us advised of the work, and they did a fantastic job. We just needed a small pad laid in the back of the house, but they were willing to do it even though it was a small job. We are very happy with the work done. We would definitely use them again."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

An ideal driveway gradient is between 2% and 5%. Anything lower than 1% or higher than 15% can cause problems for your car or property. A driveway with less than a 1% slope increases your likelihood of flooding and water damage, while a driveway with a 15% grade or higher can be too steep for safe traveling.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

It takes recycled asphalt 48 hours to initially harden and up to 3 months to fully cure. It’s best to stay off of recycled asphalt for at least 48 hours, then you can walk or drive standard vehicles on it. Hold off on driving heavy trucks or equipment on it for at least 7 days. Allowing the surface to melt together and harden ensures that the surface stays durable and long-lasting.

Several materials are suitable for steep driveways. Gravel and crushed stone are affordable options that provide good traction. Permeable pavers—such as plastic, rubber, or concrete—filled with gravel or crushed stones are also excellent, as they allow water to drain without causing erosion and perform well in ice and snow. Another option is resin, which can be coated with an anti-slip finish and helps prevent puddles. For added stability, you can install a retaining wall to prevent pavers and gravel from shifting over time.
