The main difference between asphalt and blacktop is that asphalt has a lower ratio of bitumen—a low-grade tar-like crude oil—than blacktop. While blacktop is heated to 300 degrees or more, hot-mix asphalt is heated to a lower temperature, typically between 275 and 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Asphalt can get sticky in high temperatures and intense sunlight and is better for cooler or moderate climates, while concrete is more likely to crack in colder climates where water can seep into the slab and freeze. Concrete will last longer with less maintenance, and it offers you more options for customization, including staining and stamped patterns. When asphalt cures, it typically changes from a very dark black hue to a lighter, more matte gray color. Cured asphalt also won’t be tacky or sticky to the touch or emit any odors from the asphalt mix. Additionally, the surface of fully cured asphalt won’t deform under any pressure.

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.
