"My wife has an antique telephone table that’s over 100 years old from Germany. It is the only family heirloom she had left. It was damaged in a move and I hired a carpenter from Restoration Hardware to come and repair it. He repaired it incorrectly, used glue instead of nails and then blocked my number after he screwed up! Out of desperation we called Wilfredo. Wilfredo was there in a day, repaired it on the spot and secured a priceless treasure! At the end of the day, carpentry is a skill that you don’t want to compromise on. There is no such thing as saving money when it comes to carpentry so you’d better do it right the first time with someone who knows what they are doing, and that is Wilfredo!"

"Andy and his crew were very professional and completed 56 ft of a cedar fence in about 3.5 hours. Andy is also keenly aware of the very prescriptive guidelines of HOAs and will work to ensure the work is completed in accordance with those pesky guidelines. I will use his company for future projects."

"As a contractor (but not in the trades) I’m often on the receiving end of tight budgets, rushed timelines, and high expectations/standards from my clients. Henry excels at balancing all three of those, especially for doing such sensitive work like inside someone else’s home. I will be calling him for any woodworking moving forward."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

Yes, professionals can install new frames, trim, and threshold adjustments for a complete finish.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.
