"Do not hire?.We hired him to replace a wood fence and porch lights. Light project went ok, but not the fence replacement. He installed a fence post which was out of square. The fence boards he claimed were good quality, cracked next the day from too much pressure. He used 8 ft boards instead of 4 ft. It took him two weeks to return to replace the fence post and six new boards which cracked the next day. He blamed Home Depot for defective boards. He chose their product and blamed Home Depot. I told him he should pull the boards off and cut to 4 ft and re-install. He said he wood for more money. I told him no it was his responsibility to fix it. He never returned. Me and my spouse pulled the boards off, re-cut and re-installed. I should not have listened to his sales pitch."

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.

It’s necessary for paint to completely dry before exposure to rain, and that drying time varies by the type of paint used. Oil-based paint takes 6 to 8 hours to dry on average, meaning that’s the minimum time needed between the last brush stroke and the first raindrop. Latex paint dries faster at around 1 hour, and acrylic paint is even quicker, usually drying in about 30 minutes. If rain is in the forecast, check the paint manufacturer's details before laying on a new coat. 

Yes, it’s best to remove the previous coat of stain from your deck before restaining it, especially if the surface is in bad condition. Restaining on top of an old coat can lead to an uneven surface, as the new stain won’t fully soak into the deck material. That said, if your deck is in excellent condition, you may be able to get away with just cleaning the surface instead of sanding it and removing the old stain. If you choose not to remove the previous coat, it’s best to use the same type of stain for the new layer.

Staining a deck with a rag is typically a better option than using a brush, as it helps the stain penetrate deeper into the wood. However, both brushes and rags are best reserved for detailed work because using these tools on an entire deck can require tediously crawling around on your hands and knees. A pad applicator, sprayer, or roller are preferred alternatives to applying stain over the majority of a deck. Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.
