"When I bought this house, it was was filthy, smelled horrible from outside even, was rodent and roach-infested. Counters, floors were wet and rotting. Everything had to be torn out and rebuilt. Now my home is beautiful. The bathrooms are lovely. There were no short-cuts or rush jobs, or anything left unfinished. I’ve had neighbors and friends who are in building and construction admire and compliment the high quality of the work done on my home. Most people who come in comment on the beautiful flooring, or the cleanliness of the walls and ceilings. I live in a quiet, gated community and there was never a complaint about a mess outside or noise. Very clean."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

Foundation design and soil preparation are the most critical phases of home building in Longview. The expansive clay soil requires precise geotechnical testing to prevent severe structural failure. Site grading is equally important to direct heavy rainfall away from the foundation. Additionally, incorrect placement of vapor barriers traps moisture in walls, causing mold. Always hire a professional to handle HVAC sizing and roof framing to withstand severe TX storms.

Helpful?

The hot, humid summers in Longview demand high-performance insulation and properly sized HVAC systems for any home building project. Heavy annual rainfall and expansive clay soils require robust drainage plans to protect your foundation from shifting. Because TX experiences severe thunderstorms and intense sun exposure, builders must use high-wind roof framing and UV-resistant exterior materials. You should also install freeze-proof plumbing fixtures to prepare for occasional winter ice storms.

Helpful?

Popular home building trends in Longview focus on durability and outdoor enjoyment. Homeowners favor large covered patios and screened porches to maximize outdoor living during the long warm season. Inside, open floor plans with dedicated home offices remain highly requested. For exteriors, brick and stone are top choices due to their resilience in the humid TX weather. High-efficiency HVAC systems and storm-resistant features are also essential upgrades.

Helpful?

Neglecting moisture control and drainage drastically shortens the lifespan of home building work in Longview. You should clean your gutters regularly and ensure soil slopes away from your foundation. Overwatering or underwatering your landscaping causes the local clay soil to shift, leading to structural damage. Always maintain proper attic ventilation and inspect exterior caulking annually to prevent rot and mold in the humid TX climate.

Helpful?

A geotechnical soil report is the most valuable document for your home building project in Longview. This report determines your foundation requirements based on the local clay soil. You must also check FEMA flood zone maps and assess existing drainage patterns. Confirm whether your property falls under city or county jurisdiction, as this dictates utility access and rules. Finally, review any deed restrictions or HOA covenants before finalizing designs.
