If you ever want to see the literal fruits of your labor, you’ll need to prune your peach trees. Without pruning, the trees may not grow or bear fruit since the nutrients will be divided among too many offshoots to provide any with enough energy to produce the peaches. The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. However, if the tree is leaning towards the direction of the notch, it can be cut more shallowly—at as little as 10% of the depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.

After a big storm, you may not be sure if a tree was struck or not. Look for the telltale long scars, like strips or gouges in the bark of the tree, running in sometimes jagged lines down the length of the trunk. These scars will often show vulnerable living wood inside the tree. It’s also common to see scorched or wilted leaves on the side or top of the tree where lightning struck.

A tree can split because of high winds, a change in temperature, or from an infestation or tree disease. All of these factors can overlap, making a single cause difficult to pinpoint. While winter storms are some of the most common causes for a tree to split, it can also happen because of termites or rot.

If you aren’t sure what you’re doing, be very careful when cutting mature tree roots (roots larger than 2 inches). Root cutting and pruning can affect both a tree’s stability and its ability to nourish itself. Issues during root cutting can result in damage or injury. 

It’s recommended you call in a pro to help, unless it’s a very small tree and you aren’t worried about the prospect of losing the tree.
