I felt the price was quite high, but foolishly didn't get other bids. Shame on me. The work was satisfactory, although we have run-off problems and some dead shrubs which we don't expect they will ever fix. Because I had used them, I had them bid on a job putting additional up/down lights in a few more tree clusters around the house, as well as a refresh on the mulch. The Rep (who was my Rep on the original job) came out, took about 20 minutes to hear the details and walk around, and then handed me a bid for $5,400 (NOT including tax). This included 7 up lights, 3 down lights (total of 10 lights) and delivery and spreading of 8 cubic yards of cedar mulch in our flower beds. I was somewhat shocked at the price and how quickly he arrived at the number, so I had 2 other reputable landscape companies in our area come out. After coming out, it took them several days to prepare the bid. Obviously Acacia was the highest bidder by far. The next highest (Landscaper "B") quoted 6 up lights, 8 down lights, and 1 up light for a future flagpole (15 lights) for $2,100. Acacia was almost 88% higher for 5 less lights (and I confirmed they were same low wattage/LED brass lights installed previously). Acacia quoted $1,397.50 for 8 yards spread of cedar mulch where "B" quoted 8 to 12 yards of black dyed mulch (higher quality), delivered and spread for $1,216.00. I didn't choose "B" as the 3rd quote was even lower for the same job with 15 lights and some river rock and diverts to help with the runoff issue Acacia never addressed. I called Acacia several days ago to speak with the Office Manager and shared my frustration. I was pointed, but never raised my voice or was rude other than to tell her how embarrassed and disappointed I was to have been fooled initially. I have not heard back from them with an explanation of how their estimate can be so wildly off of what other landscapers would bid the job for. I did not share Acacia's bid with them at any time, although I did mention to "B" after they presented their bid that it was much lower than another company I had bid the work. He asked who, I said "Acacia", he smirked and said, "yeah, they run pretty high". I don't know about the other jobs they bid, but I felt like I had "sucker" printed on my forehead. Mr. Bonner came in with enthusiasm, telling me how they could turn my yard into a masterpiece and that he had a pond expert that couldn't wait to design my water-feature. He said that now was the time to do it because he could give me off season pricing and some cash discount. The only drawing of the proposed landscape was one that I had designed to show them what I wanted. Since there was no plan drawn up, I needed to stay around at all times to direct the work. Throughout the job the supervisor would mention that "this might be a little bit of an upgrade" Not once was an amount given to the supposed upgrades until I was presented with the final bill which showed $28,440.00 worth of upgrades. Some were legitimate but much of the cost was extremely inflated and items were charged for that I didn't receive. First came the water feature that consisted of a top waterfall that ran about 15 feet into a koi pond. They spliced the liner at the bottom of the pond because they were trying to use leftover pond liner from a previous job. It immediately collapsed and had to be redone. The top waterfall leaked and had to be redone. He charged me $2,250.00 to "redo the pond". The finished pond immediately turned stagnant. When I went to a water feature expert I learned that the pump and skimmer were not only installed incorrectly but were not sufficient and that it should have a complete filtration system. $1,000.00 later and a lot of work I now have a working but unfinished pond. I was charged $850.00 for commercial grade weed barrier under ALL mulch areas. I only have two areas under trees that are done correctly. I have 8 areas with absolutely no weed block and 4 areas where it was partially covered. There are places where there are 3 inch gaps between the weed block and the house and gaps where it was spliced together and not overlapped. The weed barrier is as much as an inch away from the edging in many places which allows weeds to grow inside of the edge of the bed where it has to be hand weeded. As they were mulching the main front bed I noticed that there was no weed barrier on a third of it. They said that they had run out but would get more before the rest of the mulch was put down. Long story short, mulch was deceptively dumped over the bare bed and I now have weeds and stickers growing thick. Because I have an ailing husband and I am in my 60's I was striving for a less labor intensive front yard. Yesterday I was finally able to get out there and weed. Several hours later, exhausted and covered with fire ant bites, I had a pile of weeds that was enough to fill a 30 gallon trash can. Some of the mulch is so thin it barely covers the weed barrier. A full load of mulch that I paid for was dumped in the vacant lot next to me. The flower beds were filled with top soil instead of bedding soil. It is so gummy and clay filled that I have to dig it out and replace it with garden soil where ever I put a plant. The grass was delivered a week and a half prior to installation, I was told that because it was dormant it wouldn't hurt it to sit that long. It has pulled through but I was charged full price, $225.00 a pallet for dormant grass that I have since learned was discounted to Mr. Bonner during the winter season. My irrigation system is a mess also. I was assured that the irrigation man was a specialist. When I told him that it would be hooked up to a well as soon as we could get it in he told me he didn't know how to hook to a well. He obviously was not a specialist because the way he set up the drip stations has already caused the pump to burn out. When it came time to connect it to the newly installed well Mr. Bonner refused to send somebody out to show me where I should connect on. I had to remove sod and dig trenches until I was able to find the connecting place. Many of the station covers are down in the ground 6" to 8" deep and there are areas that are sunk down because of poor back fill. Some of the heads need to be adjusted, the drip system was never completed and he took all of the materials that I would need to be able to finish it myself. He refuses to honor the warranty and fix these issues. I have had to hire an irrigation service to come out and deal with some of the more pressing issues. The stepping stone path that I'd asked for became an $870.00 flagstone walkway that I didn't even want and intend to have torn out and replaced with stepping stones. They put a river rock edging in an area that I had told them should be made to match the other side and now will need to be redone. I could go on forever. I am left with unfinished pathways, an unfinished irrigation system, a rain drainage system that was left incomplete and covered up so that the rain is washing out underneath the cement steps, a driveway that is scraped up and a pile of rocks, dirt and debris that was dumped in the adjacent vacant lot. The only completed work is the rock and iron wall and fence that he subcontracted out which was originally bid at $3,600.00 and was "upgraded" to $9,400.00. I have been told by Mr. Bonner that he is "done with me" unless I agree to pay him another $10,000.00. He is now the new owner of Schulz Nursery in Marion. I hope he is more ethical in his dealings with his nursery customers than he has been with me. Some would not even come if they thought our costs would be under $3000. We had lived a short time in Kerrville prior to moving to Boerne, and I recalled passing Texas Tree Services in Kerrville. I was concerned that we lived 30 miles away, but after our lack of responses, we called them. They were here the next day and gave us an estimate, explained their services, what to expect, and even had a senior discount. Since we are newly retired, that was a very nice surprise and not one we had expected. We also had not expected an added expense for tree services when we had bought our home. The Senior Discount is very thoughtful. We also found at the end, that there had been no hidden costs as I had been surprised to see on other reviews. The final price was what we had been quoted initially.
After setting a time and date for the service which would be the next day (how surprised we were!), the supervisor and crew arrived exactly on time. The Supervisor, Randy, talked to us as the crew set-up. There was a cherry-picker and a mulcher. The professionalism of the Crew actually caught our attention; professional work method and professional manners.
We were surprised and impressed also to watch them clean up as they went. Amos picked up the fallen limbs as they were cut down by Tino ; he then carried them to the mulcher in the front where Mike ground them up. They worked constantly as an effective Team. We never cringed or worried as they got to within a foot of our new home or carried away the limbs over our new yard. I was also very surprised to see Mike even raking the leaves, twigs, etc, that had fallen down into the yard.
They worked constantly; took no breaks except for a very short lunch.
We moved here from the DC area and have learned Life moves more casually here for so many things we have needed to get done. We heard several times 'we're on our way'..only to have the service person show up 3 days later. We are learning to smile and 'slow down' as best we can. So, to have the Texas Tree Service of Kerrville show up on time, have a great work ethic, and watch a professional Crew..is something that I felt had to be shared with others who may be like we were...looking for good Service and not finding it where we looked. Angie's List is new to us. We have never needed it before. But here in a new State and a new Town and not knowing anyone, it is a great place to begin! I would have felt much better had I seen this review when we first looked on Angie's List. I hope it helps others who might be looking for Tree Service like we were."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/kerrville/texas-tree-service-reviews-5987838.htm"},"position":10}]}
Mulch And Topsoil Service reviews from real Angi homeowners in La Vernia, TX
I do NOT recommend this company. After completion of tree trimming out septic lines began to leak. Four independent septic companies said the lateral lines had been crushed by being run over. BP Tractor's mulching equipment was directly over the area of our lines. I contacted them and asked...

FAQs for mulch and topsoil service projects in La Vernia, TX
Topsoil costs from $12 to $55 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. For example, screened black dirt will cost about $15 per cubic yard. Loam (soil composed of sand, silt, and clay) costs about $17 per cubic yard. Standard screened topsoil costs about $20 per cubic yard. The type of topsoil you need depends on your landscaping plans.
Mulch costs anywhere from $30 to $150 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. On the inexpensive end, red and black mulch are about $35 to $40 per cubic yard, and are typically made from recycled waste wood like shredded old pallets or deck material. Cedar, cypress, and rubber mulch cost anywhere from $100 to $120 per cubic yard. A pro can help you determine the type of mulch most suitable for your landscaping needs.
Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.
No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.
Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.
