Quality missed the appointment time without calling beforehand, but eventually called and said that they were delayed on a big job. They came over about two hours later and did a cursory inspection without taking measurements. They promised to get me a bid within a few days, but they made no further contact. Following an extensive bidding process, I awarded the job to another contractor who successfully installed a gas heating/air conditioning system in the basement, an electric heat pump in the attic, and a mini-split ductless system in a room addition, with total expenditure of about $20,000 in all. FYI- I had difficulty getting bids from several contractors, because this was a retrofit in a historic home. I understand that not all contractors have the desire or experience to handle a job of this type, but I would have expected one of two responses from Quality, either: 1) We are not interested in the job or 2) We are interested, but only at a very high price. As it was, I received no response at all."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/killeen/quality-heating-and-air-cond-reviews-5308974.htm"},"position":2},{"@type":"ListItem","item":{"@type":"LocalBusiness","name":"Austin Retrofit","address":{"@type":"PostalAddress","addressRegion":"TX","addressCountry":"US"},"review":{"@type":"Review","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Keely A."},"reviewBody":"On install day it was incredible, there were a team of 5 guys, each with a specific job that they did completely professionally. They brought protective covering for my carpet and furniture, and cut every single piece of framing and molding to measure right there on the spot. The door slides like a dream and is much more aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient than my old door which was the original one installed when the house was built in 1970. Incredible job by an incredible company and their most expensive option was still $800 less than the bid I got from Home Depot.
They even painted my exterior trim for me because I happened to still have some paint left. Amazing job! I look at my new door and use it every day and it makes me so so happy. Thanks Austin Retrofit! These guys are professional and they know what they're doing."},"url":"https://www.angi.com/companylist/us/tx/austin/austin-retrofit-reviews-411029.htm"},"position":3}]}

Lochridge-Priest never provided a bid and did not follow-up their initial visit. At the time, I only had two other bids, so LP would likely have been one of the finalists. Based on other positive recommendations that I had received, I would have given serious consideration to their bid. As it...

"After giving many opportunities to make it right, unfortunately my experience was not a good one. Chris, Jeremy and David were all very nice, as were the workers! However, the vinyl siding installation looks like a DIY job gone bad. The cuts and seams look horrible, even after tearing it all out and putting it back on. Some of the cuts left holes, that have since resulted in damage to soffit and behind the siding that I have to deal with now. There are visible screws on the back side of the house that I was told was temporary, until they could get more siding to make the repairs. Because of the length of time it took, 2021-2024 (they had a lot of trouble matching the color for additional siding to make the repairs - even took multiple trips to get siding samples) I think they had “moved on” and I was tired of asking them to come back. I have learned my lesson to get references, and not to trust someone to do a good job just because they are nice. I also made the huge mistake of giving final payment before all the repairs were made."

Earthquake Retrofitting questions, answered by experts
Depending on where you live, your insurance company may require you to have a seismic shut-off valve. It depends on local regulations along with the specific provider. If it’s not a requirement, many providers will offer a discount if you install an earthquake valve, which can save you 5% or more. Contact your provider to learn about potential savings for your plan.
Grounding is a great first step to prevent electrical shock, but you can take it further with GFCI outlets and AFCIs (arc fault circuit interrupters). In particular, AFCIs help protect against the type of electrical arcs that cause fires, like if a mouse chews on a wire or your laptop starts overheating at the wall. These are required in some areas of your home.
A home with proper earthquake retrofitting can sustain minimal damage in earthquakes of up to 7.0 magnitude, although risks are higher based on how close and deep the earthquake is. A home closer to the earthquake epicenter will sustain greater damage, especially if the earthquake is closer to the surface of the Earth, but retrofitting can help minimize the risk of injuries.
According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.
Costs vary as much as timelines. The average earthquake retrofit costs between $3,500 and $8,700. However, homes on hillsides, large homes, and those with rooms over garages can cost up to $12,000 or more. Make sure to get a few estimates to compare the cost and services.
