"I am writing to share my positive experience with Armando and his crew. They did an excellent job replacing rotten wood with Hardie planks and provided helpful recommendations to correct repairs left by a previous contractor's poor workmanship. I would highly recommend their professionalism for any roof or siding repairs. They are truly a five-star company."

"After Hurricane Beryl, we contacted Angi list seeking a contractor to tear down all of the siding and install new siding. Andy and his workers were professional and did a great job. They also did a clean up as well. Any concerns I had, Andy addressed it."

"I don't know why we waited so long to replace our single pane windows! The noise reduction, better insulation and updated look to our home have all been worthwhile.
We got 4 bids for our house. Colony Builders' bid was the best one by a LONG shot. They had come recommended by a gentleman who had done some remodeling work for us so we felt comfortable with them from the start.
Suggestions:
1. Review your window order CAREFULLY before it is sent to Window Mart. First error---they left off the kitchen window but I was lucky enough to have caught this by reviewing the paperwork. Next error--we received plain glass for the front door side light instead of the rain glass I said I wanted. Colony Builders said it was the fault of the guy who came out a measured--the guy who came out a measured said it was Colony Builders' fault. Either way, we didn't think it was fair for us to pay to install the glass again since the mistake was not with us. Pay the difference between plain glass and rain glass? Yes. Pay for the labor? No. We ended up putting frosted film over the window for privacy.
2. Have a VERY clear answer as to how much wood will be replaced if rot is found.
3. Be prepared with additional plastic to keep the dust from flying all over your house. Our older home required that all windows be cut down to accommodate the thicker windows.
The man sent out to install our job was VERY good. I wish he had brought at least one other experienced installer with him. One person basically did the bulk of the work. A two day job ended up taking three days to install 22 windows.
Overall, we are thrilled with the windows! I wish we had been able to resolve the sidelight issue but still happy with the outcome.

Siding questions, answered by experts

Different types of siding provide unique aesthetic and structural features, with each material commanding its own cost. Availability of materials and shipping costs also factors largely into the cost. The common types of siding materials include:

  • Stucco: $7–$9 per square foot

  • Wood: $1–$15 per square foot

  • Engineered wood: $1–$6 per square foot

  • Aluminum: $3–$6 per square foot

  • Fiber cement: $5–$14 per square foot

  • Brick: $10–$20 per square foot

  • Brick veneer: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone: $7–$30 per square foot

  • Stone veneer: $5–$11 per square foot

Cracked mortar, loose bricks, water damage, and efflorescence (white powdery deposits) are common problems.

As stunning and natural as stone siding is, it's not for everyone. Some popular siding alternatives to stone siding include:

  • Aluminum siding

  • Brick veneer siding

  • Engineered wood siding

  • Fiber cement siding

  • Wood siding

  • Vinyl siding

If you want the look of natural stone siding without the high material and installation costs, vinyl siding may be one of the best alternatives. It’s lightweight, low-cost, and low maintenance but does have a lower life span than natural stone.

To clean painted aluminum siding, use a mixture of mild detergent and water applied with a soft brush or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose to remove soap residue. For stubborn stains, cleaning aluminum siding with a power washer on a low-pressure setting can be effective. But avoid using high pressure, which could damage the paint.

You should plan to stain or refinish your home's cedar siding every three to seven years to maintain its appearance and provide maximum protection, though some estimates suggest a range of four to six years. The exact frequency depends on several factors, including your local climate, exposure to severe weather like direct sunlight, rain, and wind, the quality of the initial stain application, the type of stain used, and the overall condition and quality of the wood.

For homes in harsh climates with high humidity and significant sun exposure, you should plan on staining as often as every three years, while those in milder locations may only need to do so every seven years. For the longest-lasting protection in particularly harsh climates, consider using an opaque stain.

If you are looking for a lower-maintenance alternative, you might consider vinyl or aluminum siding. While the initial installation cost can be higher, they do not require as much upkeep and can offer more value over time, especially in areas with excessive rainfall or high humidity.
