Barrett Environmental is owned by Tate Barrett, Ph.D., who is a licensed Mold Assessment Consultant by the State of Texas and a Council-certified Residential Indoor Environmentalist.

"Quick response. They were thorough and very knowledgeable. They showed up when they said they would. They gave me a full report the same day and I'm very happy about that. They were able to do the job within 5 days and that's one of the reasons why we went with them."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

No level of radon is technically safe, but because it’s everywhere—even in the air outside—it’s impossible to avoid entirely. Instead, the Environmental Protection Agency encourages taking preventative measures if the levels of radon in your home rise above 2 pCi/L. (For reference, the average radon level in homes across the United States is 1.3 pCi/L.

The only way to determine if you have a radon problem in your home is to have professional testing done. You can buy DIY radon test kits, but these are sometimes inaccurate in certain temperatures and humidity levels, and they don’t paint the entire picture in terms of your radon exposure. Scheduling testing once every two to five years is best. You can also look out for the following symptoms, which, according to the American Cancer Society, are symptoms of radon exposure:

  • Shortness of breath

  • Cough

  • Tightness in the chest

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Hoarseness

Short-term tests take 2-7 days, while long-term monitoring may require up to 90 days for accurate results.

Radon is present almost everywhere but, like sunlight, the concentration levels and how often you are exposed to it have a large part to play in just how dangerous it is. There are levels of radon that are acceptable inside a house, but above a certain limit, radon becomes a serious radioactive hazard that is a known cause of lung cancer. In fact, radon exposure is the number two leading cause of lung cancer (after smoking).

If high radon levels are detected, steps include sealing entry points, installing a mitigation system, and retesting the air regularly to ensure reduced levels.
