"I have had a lot of work done by different contractors and I have never been so pleased by the unusual professionalism and craftsmanship shown by Javier Franco and his father Mr. Franco and his uncle Juanito. They transformed my tiny little garage into a modern garage that’s functional and reframed the door with an impact door. Their work ethic is incredibly unusual— they do everything above board. They got all permits, engineering, etc. They redid the entire ceiling. The project was immense. They installed two new attic ladders. They remodeled my master bathroom because the shower was leaking. They are truly the epitome of a great classic carpenter and builder. These gentlemen explain every detail and ensure the project is done thoroughly and on time and on budget. They don’t cut corners. Anything I requested— they did. And they were glad to do anything I asked. They didn’t rush any work. Everything was cleaned every day. And I had long, long lists! And I’m extremely picky. Every little crack— they caulked. They also clearly enjoy their work. They want to make sure your home is functional and beautiful. They offer design suggestions and their experience shows. They can fix problems as things come up. Nothing ever ruffled these guys. They showed up on time every day for about 6 weeks— it was impressive! They’re not just nice people— (and yes— they are—my dog just adores them!)— but— they actually present you with perfection and so that’s what you can expect from them. I can’t wait until they do my kitchen!"

"Brandon and his team did a wonderful job on painting, texturing and cleaning up. I had them texture around 2 new windows, texture my entryway and paint my living area, entryway, fireplace and dining room. Excellent workmanship and easy to work with. I will be hiring him again for some other jobs."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Applying a sealer or topcoat after staining wood is highly recommended, though not always strictly required. A sealer protects the wood from moisture, UV rays, and weather-related issues, which is especially important for outdoor surfaces like decks and fences. It also enhances the stain's durability, prevents fading over time, and gives the wood a cleaner, more professional-looking finish. For some indoor applications, a sealer may not be necessary, depending on the type of stain used and the level of protection needed. It's always best to check the stain manufacturer's recommendations and consider the wood's intended use and exposure when deciding whether to apply a sealer.

Limewash and whitewash do not harm surfaces if you apply them correctly. Use on non-suitable surfaces can cause issues. For instance, applying limewash or whitewash to surfaces with existing sealants or incompatible materials may lead to poor adhesion or flaking. Also, harsh cleaning agents on limewashed or whitewashed surfaces can damage the finish. Proper preparation, application, and maintenance ensure that limewash and whitewash do not harm surfaces.

Wood stain is typically dry to the touch within 6 to 12 hours, but it is not fully cured at this point. You should wait at least 24 hours before applying a second coat or a protective finish. For surfaces like decks, avoid walking on them for at least 24 to 48 hours, and wait even longer before placing furniture. The full curing process can take from 24 hours to one week, depending on the type of stain. Factors like high humidity and cold temperatures can extend drying and curing times, so it's wise to allow for extra time in these conditions.

Choosing the right product involves understanding deck material, desired finish, and local weather conditions. Opt for high-quality, weatherproof formulations ensuring long-term durability and appearance retention.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.
