Customers say: Quality work

"After I asked for someone to call and schedule me in, Mark called me the following day. He came over, asked what I wanted, and gave me a quote the same day. He scheduled me out for enough to get all our stuff downstairs, yet soon enough to get the job done. Mark was always kind, professional, and punctual. After the ceiling was done, he picked up after himself. 100% satisfied with Solid Rock Drywall!"

"Kirk and his employee were very pleasant. I really like the appearance the ceilings. Kirk told me that his employee would be using a vacuum while working on the ceilings minimize the dust but he didn't. Kirk spent a long time trying to clean up the mess that was left but there was a lot of dust left over that we are still cleaning"

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. It’s very labor-intensive, and thus more costly.”

Smooth ceilings create a modern, clean look that helps brighten rooms by reflecting light, making spaces feel more open. They're easy to paint and maintain but can show imperfections. Textured ceilings add character and hide flaws like cracks or uneven drywall. With a range of patterns, you can opt for a subtle texture or something more decorative. The choice between smooth and textured ceilings comes down to your personal style and the look you want for your space.

The average popcorn ceiling removal costs around $2,000, but prices can range from $950 to $3,100, depending on the size, accessibility, and whether or not there’s asbestos or lead paint.

We don’t recommend DIYing this project to save money, but you can DIY the prep work to speed things up. Consider removing furniture, ceiling lights, and other fixtures before the workers arrive on site. To be extra helpful, cover any remaining belongings with plastic tarps and secure them with tape.

Small repairs or applications can be DIY projects, but removing older textures, especially with safety risks, is usually left to professionals.

Most handy homeowners can tackle removing texture from unpainted walls. Removing texture from painted walls is a bit trickier. Paint acts as a sealant, so you can’t soften the texture with water. Instead, you’ll have to add a layer of drywall compound known as a skim coat. This process is messy and takes some practice.
