All of the moisture getting into the cracks and crevices of your home can lead to mold or mildew problems down the line. Gutter guards are worth it if you have a lot of high trees near your home, and your gutters tend to collect a lot of leaves and debris. They can protect your gutter system against damage and save you trouble and money on gutter cleaning costs. There are many types of leaf guards, and it’s worth researching what kind is best for the type of debris and foliage your gutters collect.

On average, gutters last between 15 and 25 years. Certain materials (stainless and galvanized steel, copper, and cast iron) will have much longer lifespans, with much higher price tags. Vinyl typically lasts only 10 to 15 years, while the second most commonly used material, aluminum, lasts an average of 25 years. Only you as the homeowner will know if the additional cost of upgraded materials makes sense for your home.

The most common types of gutters are K-style gutters, half-round gutters, and box gutters. Gutters can consist of a few different materials, including vinyl, steel, aluminum, copper, and more. K-style gutters are the most popular gutters because their flat-back style makes them affordable and easy to install. They’re also more efficient at rerouting water away from your home than half-round gutters, making them a safer pick overall.

If you’re not interested in digging up your yard, but you still need to direct water away from your house, another option is to extend your downspouts further out into the yard. Two methods to do this are:

  • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.
