Concrete Leveling questions, answered by experts

Thicker concrete is less likely to crack due to extreme weather changes. At a minimum, concrete slabs should be at least 4 inches, but if you’re worried about the concrete cracking under the weight of heavy machinery or from the freeze-thaw patterns of your climate, you should use even thicker concrete. Concrete floors can last 50 to 75 years or more when properly sealed and maintained. Some concrete finishes, like polished concrete, will need to be refinished periodically—depending on the finish and foot traffic, you may need to refinish or reseal your concrete floors every five to 20 years. Keeping the concrete properly sealed will prevent damage and extend the lifespan of your concrete floors. 

If you're repairing a sagging or falling fence, a concrete base can strengthen the fence against burrowing animals, erosion, high winds, and more. Having a concrete reinforcement slab installed with a chain link fence can cost $4 to $10 per square foot.

While you shouldn’t use thinset mortar on its own as a floor leveler, it can work alongside other products to help level floors. For instance, you could start with a self-leveling compound, let that dry, then apply backer board with thinset mortar to help fully even out the floors ahead of laying tile.

While the two are similar, spalling occurs from deeper within the concrete than scaling does, causing larger fragmentation on the surface.
