"Words cannot fully express how grateful I am to have found Biotek Environmental! Ted took a lot of time compassionately listening to my concerns and explaining the initial process over the phone. Tyler patiently shared his extensive knowledge on how mold develops along with natural ways to clean clothes and surfaces. He also explained the meter reads of mold counts and humidity levels as I tagged along from room to room during the home inspection. Every step of the process was clearly explained creating a great sense of confidence in me and Dad. Crew members Jermaine, Ray, and Matt were friendly, considerate, and diligent in their hardworking task of removing the mold source. Donna was very professional and prompt to respond to any questions by email. I could go on and on with how pleased and relieved I am to have found Tyler and company but I will just close by stating the obvious: health is vital. My elderly father's health and general quality of life have improved substantially since we hired Biotek Environmental. They are also a clean company with a generous warranty. I highly recommend them to anyone in need of a healthier home."

"Baker&Taylor LLC took on a very difficult house reconstruction project that was accomplished through two contracts.
  • They saved significant costs by working out a method of reconstruction that did not require a separate house lifting contract.
  • They provided good value workmanship.
  • Change order pricing was fair.
  • The contractor was flexible in resolving detailed design issues, and was enthusiastic about the challenge of the project, as well as proposing creative design solutions that were incorporated into the project.
  • This contractor - Soren Smelz-Taylor - can be trusted to follow through on his commitments.
This was a very difficult project - the entire original wood frame foundation was replaced with a single pour integrated concrete slab and footing.  The original wood foundations had failed. There was significant settlement of the bearing walls; and the house frame had to be jacked up, stabilized, and reinforced before the concrete foundation was formed and then placed.  A laminated beam frame, to support the second floor, replaced the original frame walls and opened up the first floor area to facilitate rehabilitation. The owner resided on the second floor while all the work was done.

There was a second contract to replace the roof and install new fiber cement siding over a rain screen system.  The house front wall was finished with a unique coffered panel design that the contractor developed and refined in order to install an integrated sliding garage door, as well as fit with the other building elements such as windows and entry stairway.

The end result of this work is a born again house. The original house was decrepit and close to a demolition project because of it's structural condition. Baker&Taylor turned it into a very attractive home that now has a future."

Lead Testing and Removal questions, answered by experts

You can paint over lead paint, or “encapsulate” it with a special paint that includes an ingredient called an encapsulant. The EPA approves encapsulation as a lead paint removal method as long as the paint remains undisturbed. Standard types of paint without an “encapsulant” from the big box stores or hardware stores do not meet EPA standards for remediation of lead-based paint.

Structural problems with the foundation or roof, water damage, and significant plumbing or electrical issues are all considered major red flags in a home inspection. Of these, a structural problem related to the foundation is often the most severe. Foundation repairs are typically the most expensive and intrusive to carry out, averaging around $5,000 but sometimes reaching up to $16,000. Because these problems can pose safety risks and be costly to fix, you should ask your inspector detailed questions about any identified issues. You will need to carefully consider how major problems affect what you’re willing to pay for the home, or if you want to proceed with the sale at all.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hazardous waste is generally classified into four main categories:

1. Characteristic Wastes: These exhibit at least one of four hazardous traits: ignitability (flammable, like gasoline), corrosivity (can rust or decompose materials, like car batteries), reactivity (unstable and can explode, like aerosol cans), or toxicity (harmful when ingested, like lead-based paint).

2. Listed Wastes: These are specific wastes from manufacturing and industrial processes that the EPA has officially designated as hazardous. They include byproducts from processes that use solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals.

3. Universal Wastes: These are commonly generated hazardous items that are subject to streamlined regulations. Examples include batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment (e.g., bulbs), and some lamps.

4. Mixed Wastes: This category includes waste that contains both hazardous and radioactive components, making it subject to regulation by both the EPA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

A lead paint inspection is a thorough examination and assessment of a building or structure to determine the presence of lead-based paint. Lead-based paint was commonly used in buildings before 1978 when its health hazards were fully understood. Lead is toxic and can pose health risks, particularly to young children and pregnant women. Getting a lead paint inspection means finding a lead paint inspector to examine the surfaces of the building—such as walls, ceilings, doors, windows, and other painted areas—and identify the presence of lead-based paint.

A professional indoor air quality inspection takes anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the size of your home and the number of necessary samples. After the test, the specialist will discuss the findings, but you won’t get a full written report for 2 to 10 days, though you can ask your pro to expedite the process, if needed.
