Johnny K’s is a small owner operated company opened shortly after moving to Myrtle Beach in 2005. I personally do all the work which helps to keep a level of quality not commonly found. I have comparable pricing to the big-box stores with the personal care of a small company. If you call Johnny K’s you get Johnny K not automated push button answering service. I like to take things a little more personal, people first not things. Sub-contractors are only used when license is required ie Plumbers/Electricians. I do have a $65. service fee for small repairs. Free estimates. I have recently found that many websites such as (Angie's list, Porch and, Yellow Pages) are doing very little to verify reviews before posting them to a profile. This is allowing for bogus reviews, good and bad, to be posted and seen by potential customers. Due to a recent attack, I have found that of these, Home Advisor was the only website that actually verified the review before posting to a profile. Porch and the Yellow Pages allowed for a profile to be created by a bogus reviewer. Because of this happening to my business, I refuse to post anything to these other sites and will only be using Home Advisor in the future. Thanks, JK

Furniture Refinishing questions, answered by experts

Wood furniture gets sticky when dirt and grime accumulate on the surface. Sometimes, wax coatings and oils are the culprit, but other times, it’s a sign that the finish is failing, and no amount of cleaning your wood furniture will help. Varnish and lacquer can both get sticky as they age, and in this case, you’ll need to refinish the wood to stop the issue.

The cost to refinish a table is about $250, depending on the size, type of finish, and amount of detail involved in the table and the new finish. The lowest price to refinish a table is about $80, and the highest is about $700. Additional tasks like dipping, stripping, staining, and painting will add to the total project cost. Here are average costs to refinish a table by type:

  • Side or end table: $80–$150

  • Coffee table: $150–$250

  • Dining room table: $400–$700

Yes, in most cases it’s a good idea to wrap furniture in plastic to protect it from dirt, dust, and damage during storage. However, natural and porous materials such as wood or leather should have breathable fabric covers to prevent moisture damage from condensation. Either way, it’s always important to ensure proper ventilation to prevent moisture buildup, especially in humid climates.

For small, simple pieces that aren’t antiques, a professional furniture refinisher can usually refinish a piece in two to three hours, while larger pieces—like bed frames and full dining sets—could take several days. Your refinishing professional should be able to give you an estimated timeline for the work before getting started so that you can plan to be without your furniture during the process. Antique furniture might require additional time and take a week or more to refinish, as they require special care to avoid damage.

Telling the difference between high-quality wood furniture and lower-quality pieces is challenging, but there are a few sign that indicate whether your furniture is worth repairing:

  • Push your fingernail into an inconspicuous section of the wood. If it doesn’t leave a dent, it’s likely hardwood and is well worth a repair.

  • Unzip the bottom of couches to look for the structural components. If they’re made of wood rather than particle board, it’s likely worth refinishing.

  • Ask a local furniture repair technician. A reputable professional will let you know if you’re better off replacing rather than refinishing your specific item.
