Yes, paint does go bad. How long a can of paint will last once opened depends on the type of paint and the storage conditions. If you take care to store it properly—sealed up airtight in a cool, dry spot away from the sun—your paint can last for several more years. 

The type of paint and finish you choose impacts the overall cost of your painting project. Some of the most common types of paint include:

  • Primer: $10–$20 per gallon

  • Flat or matte finish: $10–$70 per gallon

  • Eggshell or satin finish: $12–$72 per gallon

  • Semi-gloss finish: $14–$74 per gallon

  • High-gloss finish: $16–$76 per gallon

If you want your paint to have a smooth finish, the technique you use is very important. Keep your brush at a 90-degree angle while applying the paint and feather as you go. Between coats, sand the wall lightly using a very high grit sand sponge of at least 220 grit.

You can paint over old paint on a concrete porch. For the best results, you should first clean the surface and remove as much paint as you can. A power washer is helpful here, but you’ll also want to scrape as much of the old paint away as possible. Then you should prime the porch before repainting it.

Although most contractors, like painters, earn an hourly rate and do not expect tips, you can still tip if you’re satisfied with the job and feel that the painters went above and beyond.
