If you're hoping to save time by simply painting over your front door, we have bad news. This usually won’t give you the results that you want. You need to fully prep your door so that the paint adheres to the surface. Use an oil-based primer to prevent the adhesive from bleeding through. However, if the paper is damaged or loose, removal is the better long-term solution.

Many professionals combine spraying and rolling to help your exterior paint job last longer. They first spray the surface to cover the whole area quickly, then use a technique known as back-rolling. This involves using a textured roller to work the wet paint into the surface to promote maximum adhesion. It also produces a soft finish that helps hide surface blemishes and makes touching up easier.

For information on how long it will take for paint to dry on a metal roof, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. Typically it will take a few hours to dry but may need to be left for up to 24 hours to cure fully—but up to 10 days is better yet.
