They were right on schedule when they estimated they would be able to do the job, and came on June 12. Though I was not home, when they arrived, my adult son told me they showed up around 10:30 with a crew of 4-5 men. It was a hot, sunny day, but they worked very hard with a variety of trucks and heavy machinery to dig out the old driveway and concrete apron, and put down the new layers of asphalt. The work crew was very diligent and hard working and they were at my house until about 7:30 pm. The driveway turned out great and I was very pleased with the work. I was also very impressed with the finishing touches they did, grading the soil bordering the edge of the driveway by hand with a rake, and cleaning up thoroughly on the street, sweeping up dirt and asphalt debris and using blowers to blow the dust away. When the job was all done, Joe Perry explained a few things about future seal coating, and took the final payment for the job, which I paid by personal check. If I had to give a grade to the total job, it would be an A-. There are only two minor things that in hindsight would have moved their grade to a solid A or A+. One of the sprinkler heads in the grass right next to the driveway they installed was left a bit high, and had I not intervened would have probably been damaged or sheared off by a lawnmower. I was able to lower the sprinkler head afterwards when I put some sod in next to the driveway, so that was not a big deal. The other minor concern was that they had to take apart part of a low retaining wall next to the driveway to remove a section of the concrete apron with their machines. When they put the wall back, it was a little crooked, and they left a scrape on the edge of the top finished stone. They also did not re-glue the top stones with adhesive to the cinder blocks. I was able to adjust the stones so it looks better, but the top stones are still not glued down. This is a minor issue, but I thought it worth mentioning to be thorough. Overall, however, I was very happy with the quality of the job, and I would enthusiastically recommend J Perry to anyone who needs a new driveway or other similar paving jobs. I consider them to be antiques, and really want to avoid ever having to destroy them if necessary. My house came with a disclosure of a slow drain in the second floor tub. I was able to get the drain to clear on and off using drano, and plunging. But the problem has never gone away completely. A few days ago we had a major backup on the second floor. Regardless of my best attempts to dislodge it, this time it was backing up and really badly. I had several companies look at it, one of the big name companies sent me an inexperienced plumber who wanted $700 to pull my old style toilets. He wasn't too confident that he would be able to put it back, so I didn't use their services. Speedy Rooter came out very quickly when I called them. They diagnosed the problem, and found that it likely could be resolved by snaking through my new style third floor toilet. It actually took Speedy Rooter more time to haul the equipment up to my third floor than it did to clear the line. They pulled out a massive clog that must have been the root cause of the trouble. So hopefully I won't have to call them again anytime soon. But, I would definitely call them next time I need work done. And it looks like he's a straight-A student here so I was eager to give him a call when our boiler imploded when I was 5 months pregnant (about one year ago). I wrote a draft of this review but apparently never posted it. It came to my mind again when we had Affordable back last week to tune up the new boiler they installed one year ago and to give us a quote on replacing our tenant's 35 year-old oil boiler with a gas unit (we live in a two-family) and replacing that unit's leaking water heater. We ultimately decided on a different local plumber for the water heater because of the reasons below. What I liked:
Wayne knows his stuff. He's obviously knowledgeable and good at his trade, which I appreciate. He was quick to respond to us and give us a quote quickly. This is key when you?re living without heat in November. He also was accommodating when it came to meeting me at my workplace to pick up a deposit for the job. The unit that was installed has so far been reliable and efficient. The price seemed fair.
What I didn?t love:
Professionalism: There?s a bit lacking in the professionalism department. His crew is very nice, but it was a rowdy bunch that was very loud. Normally, I wouldn?t care and I can?t fault them (after all they were trapped in my basement for an entire day) but our tenant was on call and working third shift. They started in the morning and didn?t finish the project until 5pm. They kept waking her up with loud expletives/raucous behavior and knocking on her door thinking I lived there after repeatedly being asked not to (I even hung a sign on her door). As a landlord (my home is my business), it sucked.
The appointment time was also a bit of a moving target. Wayne asked if he could push me off a few times and I had to stand my ground, reminding him that it was cold and we?d been without any heat for 5 days. He understood and the appointment stood. His crew was also interested in some of my husband?s things in the basement and wanted to ?check them out.? Not a huge deal, but can?t we pretend that our stuff isn?t on display? Also, sometimes, it?s hard to deal directly with Wayne?you get routed to one of his employees who will do the job, but have to contact you later about the specifics only Wayne can answer (anything quote related).
Clean Up: Clean-up was lacking too. Left behind was a Wendy?s cup with diesel fuel in it, some French fries, and other assorted trash. Even if $5,000 is a good price for the type of boiler we got, it?s at a price point where I don?t want to have to get rid of erroneous diesel fuel and trash.
Haul Away: Classic RI scenario here. Wayne ?knows a guy.? Turns out that guy (who is very nice) works full-time doing something else and collects scrap on the weekends. Then you have to make an entirely NEW appointment with this guy (only for a weekend?not awesome when you?ve already lost a day for the install?and paid 5k) who showed up with his young son to try to wrestle the beastly old boiler out. He used our hand-truck, banged up some stuff, and the whole thing was a debacle. The rest of the stuff I can mostly deal with; this issue alone would be enough for me to not hire Affordable again.
Overall: Given our experience this week with the tune-up and quote to replace our tenant?s unit, I?m also getting the impression that Affordable is pro-oil and not very impartial about gas. My research indicated that a gas conversion ? especially with National Grid incentives ? would not be that costly for that unit. Affordable didn?t really provide us with accurate information about the gas incentives or cost, or even the process to get an incentive. Our overall impression was that they weren?t being hugely straight with us about it. We had another plumber come in today who laid out what we needed to know without pressuring us towards oil or gas. For that reason, I will be transferring our business over to our new plumber (also found on Angie?s List). Dirt Hauling reviews from real Angi homeowners in Barrington, RI
It went great. I called Ruben from Eagle Gutters and he came right down and gave me an estimate. I read all the reviews on their company and decided to go with them. They did a great job....took down original wooden gutters and hauled them away. I was impressed with how fast and efficient...
I can't say enough about Dean and his staff. Unlike many contractors, he provides meticulous work at a very reasonable price. In addition, he hauls everything away, so we didn't have to find someone and pay extra to clear it all away. He updated our first-floor powder room stripped the...
Although my home's 65 year-old boiler was working when I purchased it, I was told it was on borrowed time. Sure enough, the house never really felt warm in the winter (even after adding $4k of insulation), and parts of the house couldn't get any heat despite fully functioning radiators and...
I contacted J Perry in November 2014 to get an estimate. Marshall, a very nice older man, came out and measured and gave got the estimate for the job which was $3852. We decided to do the job in the spring. I called in April, signed a contract with Joe Perry on April 20, and gave a 50 %...

FAQs for dirt hauling projects in Barrington, RI
The kinds of items or materials accepted will vary by hauling company. Some companies will not handle hazardous waste, but hiring ones that do will cost from $5 to $100 or more, depending on what type and quantity of material.
Most companies will haul items such as:
Construction and remodeling waste: $100–$600
Appliances: $50–$600
Furniture: $50–$400
Electronics: $60–$200
Yard waste: $70–$500
Unfortunately, some plumbing scenarios, like a broken sewer pipe repair, will require excavation to complete the job. Plumbing excavation costs range from $30 to $70per cubic foot. However, if you need additional trenching, expect to pay an extra $4 to $12per linear foot. Keep in mind that these costs are on top of the plumbing repair costs, and they don’t account for labor costs. Consult your excavation specialist to determine an accurate estimate for your job.
The cost to hire a professional junk hauling service ranges from $60 to $600, averaging about $270. Your final price is determined by the type of junk, amount of junk, the distance to the dumpsite, and the equipment required to move and haul your items or materials. Keep in mind that construction junk removal is more expensive than hauling household items, so expect to pay $800 for removing large piles of debris.
The average cost for pool excavation is $2,500. This cost can range from $450 to $4,500, depending on the pool shape and size, time of year, and any need to move buried utilities.
When excavating for your pool, you might have to move existing utilities. You can expect to pay an additional $15 to $25per linear foot to move gas lines. To move a septic system, it’ll cost an additional $2,000 to $20,000. A pool that is 10 feet by 12 feet averages $450 to excavate, and a 20-foot-by-40-foot pool averages $3,020.
The cost for residential excavation is $3,200 on average, ranging between $50 and $200per cubic yard. Total costs could range from $500 to $15,000, depending on the project type, yard size, and soil type.
When a project needs an excavator, the contractor will subcontract one as part of the larger project. If you hire an excavation specialist, you can expect to pay between $40 and $180per hour. When excavating, if you have soil with excessive rocks or clay deposits, expect an additional cost of $200 to $1,200.
