"Chris and his team installed beautiful turf around our gazebo by the pool. Not only does it look great and is maintenance free, it’s like walking on a soft carpet. The dogs love it too! Chris was quick to come out in response to my request and quickly got our turf ordered and squeezed us in to get the job done before the pool is opened. The area on one side was tight so they did it all by hand rather than drive the skid loader over the concrete. They could not have been more accommodating, also working with us on raising an in ground electrical box. Excellent work done by the entire team. I would highly recommend!!"

He has very high standards and worked accordingly. The results of the drywall repair were excellent but, even more impressive was how he approached putting the tiles down. He noticed a truly minor unevenness in the concrete. What most others would have ignored he took great care in leveling that out and the results in the end were spectacular. The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its particular material, whether it was properly installed, how well it’s maintained, and your local climate. Concrete, stone, and brick retaining walls last the longest, with concrete lasting between 50 and 100 years on average. Brick tends to last the longest, with a minimum of one century, under the right conditions. 

Timber retaining walls can start to deteriorate at 20 years, depending on the wood quality, but in the best case, they can last 40 years. Pressure-treated wood retaining walls last 30 years on average.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.  

Options include concrete, stone, brick, and wood, tailored for specific design needs.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

The longevity of flood walls depends on how they were constructed, but most wood, gravel, and cement flood walls last 10 years. While aluminum flood walls may cost far more initially, they can be a good investment as they can last decades and will not be damaged by exposure to the elements.
