"Andrew installed 2 retaining walls and did some landscaping. I was very pleased with his professionalism and the quality of his work. He does good hardscape and landscape work, but he worked alone much of the time and the scope of the jobs he can do is limited accordingly. I plan to hire him next spring for an additional project and would not hesitate to recommend him."

"Eric repaired existing laminate wood flooring in my Mt Washington condo. Despite weeks of shopping I could not find panels to match and only Eric offered to do the job with the little existing stock we had. He offered to do the job within a week of our first meeting but my wife insisted on trying to find more panels to no avail. Eric showed up a week after we called him back with a very qualified assistant and finished the job within about 4 hours. It is absolutely perfect and he came in at half the price of the other contractor we talked to (the original installer BTW). All I can say is Eric and his company are great. His website says he is out of Indiana PA but he clearly services Pittsburgh."

Small jobs welcome

"Seth Foor is a personable, conscientious young man, well-equipped both physically and mentally for competently and effectively completing any number of "odd jobs" for which a homeowner might hire a contractor. I spoke with him over the phone concerning a number of handyman jobs; he proved knowledgeable, experienced, and interested in the work. Upon arranging an appointment for an estimate, Seth arrived at my house having done his homework. We discussed window and door issues, and Seth was well prepared with information and suggestions, even recommending a number of internet videos I might watch to get a better grip on the issues at hand. Seth was ready to go the next day and arrived promptly with tools and eagerness to do a good job. And he did a good job. I will be pleased to hire Seth in the future. I can trust he'll do a professional job. As he was leaving, Seth spied my Yamaha guitar leaning against a wall and we ended up having a discussion about music and guitar playing. Seth proves quite competent at that, too. A musician with hands skilled not only for guitar strings but as well for hammers, saws, wrenches, screw drivers, drills, paint brushes ... what have you -- that marks Seth Foor. If you need a handy man, Seth Foor can very well fill the demands of the role and at reasonable rates. Give him a call. I'm glad I did."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

The time to build a vinyl deck varies based on factors like size, the complexity of the design, and weather conditions. Generally, a straightforward project might take a few days to a couple of weeks for preparation, installation, and any necessary inspections. However, larger or more intricate designs may extend the timeline. Timely acquisition of permits, efficient planning, and coordination with contractors will all help to make the construction process as smooth and quick as possible.

While you can use various materials like sand or even just soil, gravel is widely considered the best option to put under a deck. It provides excellent drainage and is resistant to water, fire, and pests. Gravel also helps anchor the soil to prevent erosion during heavy rain and acts as a built-in weed blocker, reducing regular upkeep. Furthermore, it is simple to spread, available in various textures and tones, and adds a polished look that complements any deck design.

The best and fastest way to remove paint from a deck often involves combining a chemical stripper with a pressure washer. Gel-based paint strippers are highly recommended because their thick consistency makes them less messy and easier to apply than liquid strippers. After applying the stripper to loosen the paint, you can use a pressure washer to efficiently wash away the residue. When using a pressure washer for this task, it's important to use a low pressure (under 1000 PSI) to avoid forcing too much moisture into the wood, which could lead to mildew or rot.

Yes, pressure washing a wood deck can be a good idea as it effectively lifts ingrained dirt, mold, and mildew, improving the deck's appearance and longevity. However, it must be done carefully, as it's easy to damage the wood, especially softwoods. To pressure wash safely, use a lower pressure setting and a wide, 40-degree fan pattern nozzle (often white). Keep the nozzle at least a foot away from the wood surface and maintain constant motion, avoiding hovering in one spot to prevent gouging.

You can build an outdoor kitchen on a deck, but you should choose composite decking since it's more heat-resistant. Metal deck materials like steel and aluminum are also good choices because they're less flammable than wood. You should also consider the weight of the kitchen—make sure your deck can support it and any appliances you plan to use. You should consult a structural engineer to confirm exactly how much weight your deck can safely support when building an outdoor kitchen.
