"Both chimney sweeps first of all were professional. Second, they told you what they would/were doing. With this they also supplied pictures of the flue and chimney. Third, they completed the work in a timely manner and thoroughly cleaned up after the job was done. Finally, they went over the work they did and made me aware of what maintenance I need to do in the future."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

If untreated, smoke damage is definitely toxic. Carbon and tar are two types of toxic chemicals in smoke that can damage your lungs and other parts of your body if you breathe them in for long periods of time. If you still smell smoke after the fire, it’s important that you call your restoration team for support.

Costs depend on the extent of damage, material restoration, labor, and emergency service requirements.

In most cases, yes, a fire-damaged house can be repaired. The only exception would be if a house fire leads to major structural damage. In that case, it might be faster and more affordable to knock down the house and start from scratch. In most cases, though, repairs are possible with help from a professional.

Luckily, you can typically eliminate your microwave’s burnt smell within a few hours for most situations. Be sure to let it air out for two to three hours after cleaning to let the odor evacuate your home—if you close your home up too early, the odor will be trapped. For stronger, more stubborn burnt smells, it might take a full day or more to really notice a difference.

Some of the most common chimney problems include:

  • Creosote buildup

  • Chimney blockage

  • Deteriorating brickwork or stonework

  • Cracked chimney top

  • Damaged flashing

  • Flue liner damage or deterioration

  • Damaged chimney cap

If you suspect you have a chimney problem, contact a masonry contractor for an inspection.
