"LeafFilter doesn't clean gutters, they sell and install their LeafFilter Gutter products and only clean the gutters if you buy their product. I can't even begin to afford their product so I wasn't able to get my gutter cleaned by them."

"After looking at several different styles of gutter guards we decided on LeafFilter and are happy we did. The sales person contacted us immediately to set up an appointment. He came at the promised time to look at the job. He was friendly, and in our opinion, honest. After looking at our house, he recommended installing guards only on the rear gutters, since there are only small trees on the front side of the house. We than sat down to discuss the quality of the product and the cost. He offered several discounts to offset the price.  He also recommended leaving the installation date open which resulted in another discount. He guaranteed the job would be completed by a certain date, but it might be installed sooner due to cancellations. Besides getting the discount, it worked out fine. The installer called the very next week and was able to install the LeafFilter that day. He came on time and was friendly and professional. He knew exactly what to do. He finished the installation and cleaned up the area quickly and thanked us for using LeafFilter. We later received a follow up phone call to see if we were happy with the process, which we were. The real test came shortly later during a heavy rain. Water was not pouring over the gutters, but there were more leaves on the ground which showed that they were not stuck in the gutters. We were very happy.
If and when the trees grow in the front yard to cause problems we will use LeafFilter to solve the problem."

Gutter Cleaning questions, answered by experts

If you want to avoid burying your downspouts, several alternatives can help direct water away from your home's foundation. One option is to connect a rain barrel to your downspout. During a storm, the barrel collects water that you can later use for irrigating your lawn or garden. Another common solution is to install an above-ground downspout extension. This can be done in a couple of ways:

  • Splash Guards: Placing a splash guard, available at most hardware stores, under your downspout can act as a simple funnel to direct water away from the house.

  • Downspout Extensions: You can add an extension to the end of the downspout's elbow to carry water further into your yard. Some extensions are flexible, allowing you to maneuver them around landscaping.

These above-ground solutions are particularly useful if your home has a slab foundation that you cannot dig up. However, they have limitations. An extension may not move water as far from your home as an underground system. More importantly, if your yard slopes back toward your house, these methods will be ineffective, and burying your downspouts remains the best option to prevent potential flooding and water damage.

Shingle granules can be cleaned out of gutters using a small scoop or a hose, depending on the quantity of granules and how much other debris is in your gutters. First, clear your gutters of leaves and other debris. This may remove granules in the gutters if they are mixed in with the debris. Use a plastic scoop to remove larger quantities of granules or a hose with a high-powered nozzle for smaller amounts, and collect and dispose of the granules once they’ve been removed.

Once you’ve installed your gutters, you'll need to maintain them. You should clean your gutters once or twice a year to keep them functioning correctly. But if climbing a ladder and scooping out handfuls of wet leaf gunk is just not your thing, you can hire a professional gutter cleaner near you to do the job.

Yes, professionals can spot and rectify downspout issues such as clogs, leaks, or disconnections during cleaning. They ensure proper water flow, protecting the building's foundation and preventing water damage or erosion.

The cost to install a downspout extension or reroute a downspout generally falls between $30 and $200. The final price depends on factors like whether you DIY the project or hire a gutter professional, the complexity of your gutter system, and the length of the new extension. A simple, above-ground DIY installation can cost as little as $30 for materials. In contrast, a more complex project involving professional installation and digging trenches for underground piping could cost over $1,000. This is still a significant saving compared to replacing your entire gutter system, which costs around $1,900 on average.
