"EXCELLENT! I would and I plan on hiring him again. The front deck was falling to disrepair and the stairs were steep and dangerous. We never had a walkway put in so there was quite a bit of work to be completed. All the work was completed in an excellent, professional manner, with new stairs relocated leading to the driveway. He added a walkway and cleaned up all our overgrown vegetation. The deck was sanded back to original wood, deck sealer and painted beautifully. We had him build a wooden gate to match the deck design. Five stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️"

"Anthony was extremely customer friendly and easy to communicate with throughout the entire project I needed completed. During my particular project, Anthony asked me multiple times if I was happy with the work, and or, was willing to listen to me during project to meet my exact specifications and requirements. Anthony performed the job very well and I was super pleased with the results. If you are looking for a contractor that is knowledgeable, treats customers with respect and cares for them, will get the job done in a timely fashion, and will ensure the results are of the highest quality I suggest you hire Anthony. "He cleaned gutters and removed tiger stripes on them, did brick work, repaired crown moldings, power washed, replaced an outdoor lantern, changed outdoor bulbs, replaced a dimmer on my range hood, fixed a door lock and painted my front door. All this in 5 days. He was on time, had only one helper, cleaned up, and was accommodating. Very satisfied."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

The best way to sand a deck is by cleaning it, sanding the boards and stairs with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper, and sanding the railings and posts with 80-grit sandpaper. You should sand in the direction of the wood grain to avoid damaging the timber. When sanding your deck, use medium pressure and aim for an even sand. Pressing too hard with a sander can damage decks, as most are softwoods.

Yes, it’s definitely possible to build a pergola on an existing deck. All you need to do is attach the pergola support beams to the deck’s joists and build up from there. Beware that mistakes can damage your deck, so if you’re at all unsure of the process, play it safe and hire a pro for your custom build.

In most cases, sanding an old deck before staining it is necessary to achieve a decent finish. If your old deck has a relatively new stain finish on it and you're only doing touch-ups, you can generally skip the sanding part. However, if your goal is to make the deck look and function better, sanding first is a must.

The choice between Trex, a brand of composite decking, and PVC decking depends on your priorities regarding budget, appearance, and environmental impact. Both materials are durable and resistant to moisture and insects. Trex is often considered more eco-friendly because it contains recycled wood and plastic and is 25% recyclable, while PVC is fully synthetic and harder to recycle. Aesthetically, Trex is designed to look more like real wood, whereas PVC often has a glossier, more plastic-like finish. In terms of cost, Trex is typically less expensive than PVC.
