If possible, avoid placing furniture in front of a return air vent. A blocked air vent can cause your HVAC system to use more energy, which in turn can lower the life span of your unit and raise your energy bill. Furniture can also trap hot or cold air, damaging your furniture or appliances. 

Professional duct installers suggest leaving between six and 12 inches of space in front of an air return vent. If you must place furniture in front of a return air vent, try to aim for putting furniture over a floor vent instead of in front of a wall vent, and avoid draping curtains over any vent system.

You have two different types of air vents in your home: supply and return air vents. Your supply air vents are responsible for pushing air into your home. Meanwhile, return air vents draw warmer air back into the ductwork to condition it by removing the warm molecules from it. Both types of vents are necessary to a working HVAC system and a comfortable home.

To clean an HVAC fresh air intake, start by going outside and figuring out where the intake is located on your home. Then, take a wire brush, rag, or wet/dry vacuum cleaner and use it to remove the built-up dirt and debris that’s accumulated on the external part of the intake.

There should be a lever outside the duct that you can open and close. In the horizontal position, it’s open, and in the vertical position, it’s closed.

You won’t have to do much to prepare for air duct cleaning. Make sure your vents are easy to access, and move any nearby furniture or other objects out of the way. If you have a furnace or air conditioner unit, ensure they are easily accessible. And if you have a pet, make plans to get them out of the house, if possible. Vent vacuuming can be loud and requires access to all rooms, so you may want to take extra steps for pet safety.
