Yes, a mist coat can be too thick. If you don’t dilute the mist coat enough and you apply a thick coat to the wall, the plaster won’t be able to evenly absorb the coat. This can cause the later coats of paint to not adhere to the mist coat or plaster, leaving behind flaking, peeling, or bubbling paint. Even if it doesn’t flake or peel right away, a thick primary layer of mist coat can also cause the final paint job to look uneven.

The answer depends on the garage door itself. If your garage door is flat, a roller is the fastest and easiest way to paint it. A combination of brushes and rollers is best for garage doors with designs or textures. The brush allows you to thoroughly paint all the grooves and angles while the roller speeds up the process on large, flat areas. 

The main difference between limewash and paint is their chemical makeup and ingredients. Limewash is made from lime and water, which is more breathable than the ingredients in paint, which is made from a combination of plastic, acrylic, or latex. Because of these ingredients, limewash is more transparent than paint; it also only appears as white, while paint can be mixed into an endless number of different colors and shades.

If your popcorn ceiling is asbestos-free and you are ready for a new look, painting is an option. As long as there is no flaking or other wear, a new coat of paint might be just the thing to refresh the old ceiling. The best way to paint a popcorn ceiling is to use either a paint sprayer or a thick roller to cover the popcorn texture fully. (Do not forget to dust it off beforehand!)

“Note that if you eventually want to remove the popcorn ceiling, a painted ceiling is a labor-intensive job to remove and will cost more,” says Bob Tschudi. “Once painted, the process of removing the popcorn ceiling requires physical scraping as opposed to a spray-and-scrape approach. You can sometimes add water to your spray gun, depending on the design of your sprayer and the type of paint, paint finish, or sealant. In many cases, mixing in around 10% percent of water to the paint makes for an easier application process and further evens out the mist.
