"My experience was excellent. I have hired Brandon Burk on two different jobs. The first was all electrical. I had some plugs that I wanted moved to different locations. He completed the job in a timely manner with no complications. The second time was for a larger job requiring electrical, plumbing, remodeling, and handyman work. I had a closet that he turned into a shower. Plumbing had to be moved, as well as some electrical plugs relocated. The shower required extensive work as a wall had to be moved, shower kit put in place, faucet/shower head installed, and the drain line ran connecting it into my sewer system. I also had him install some underpinning around the building. All work was done in a professional and timely manner. I was very pleased with his work ethic, and appreciated how he completed the job, making sure everything worked as it should and cleaned the work location up. I recommended him to one of my family members and would definitely recommend him again to anyone needing work done. If I have any more work to be done He will be my first call."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, professional installations include reinforced corner posts to ensure durability.

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Framing with metal studs can be significantly faster than using wooden studs, provided you have some experience working with the material. While you can use virtually instant pneumatic nailers with wood, metal requires installing screws. However, because metal is lighter, straighter, usually comes cut-to-length, and doesn't require sorting for the best pieces, you can save significant time using metal instead of wood.
