"Mike and crew screened in our back porch, approximately 250 sq ft, We live on a golf course and needed protection from bad golf shots. The finished product is absolutely the way we had envisioned it to be. There were some built in challenges for Mike to solve and his knowledge and skilled carpentry overcame these issues with perfection. The finished product looks like it has always been a part of our home. We couldn't be more satisfied. We highly recommend Mikes Handyman Service. Added bonus is that he left the job site in excellent clean condition. A big plus is that Mike is a great person, honest and trustworthy and just a good guy."

Awnings questions, answered by experts

The main disadvantage of an awning window is that you can’t use it to escape in an emergency. Another disadvantage of awning windows is that they can get dirty quicker than other types of windows that don’t open outward, especially if you keep them open when it’s raining or snowing. You can hire a local window replacement installer to decide if an awning window is right for your home.

Yes, you can replace just the fabric on an awning without having to replace the entire awning frame and hardware. This process will take a professional about one to two hours. If you want to DIY, it could take longer, especially for large or retractable awnings. Replacing the fabric on an awning can improve the look of your home and help naturally cool your interior and exterior spaces.

A retractable awning won’t necessarily increase your home’s value very much, but it can offer a boost of aesthetic appeal to potential buyers. In the long-term, however, a well-placed awning will save you money on cooling and protect your deck and outdoor furniture from sun exposure during the hot summer season.

The longest-lasting awning materials include vinyl, polycarbonate, and polyester for their durability and cleanability. Other materials like canvas and metal can last a long time, but may wear out faster. The key to getting the longest life from your awning material is to maintain it properly by cleaning yearly, keeping debris from gathering on it, and protecting it during stormy weather or high winds by retracting it or moving it to a protected area.

Acrylic, polyester, and vinyl are common options. Choose based on durability, UV resistance, and style.
