Start by unscrewing the overflow valve, which is located on the wall of your tub between the floor drain and the tub spout. Repeat the process until the snake comes out clean, and then reinstall the cap on your overflow valve.

Using a scrub brush or slightly abrasive sponge, clean the top of the stopper, and run the faucet to ensure the drain is clear and the stopper is clean. 

Before the widespread use of PVC, affixing a ground wire to plumbing pipes was generally considered to be an acceptable workaround. Nowadays, not so much. There are plenty of nonmetallic water pipes and fittings out there, so any ground previously provided by the metallic piping would be interrupted in these cases, which is dangerous.
