Yes, it’s possible a burglar can get through a deadbolt. Some types of deadbolts are harder for an intruder to get through, though. Locksmiths typically recommend using a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, instead of the popular oil-based lubricants you can purchase at almost any store. Dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating instead of attracting more dirt and debris like an oil-based lubricant. You can find these at a hardware store; some are made explicitly for lock use.

The good news is that, yes, you can change locks yourself. Many people find it’s an easy DIY project that requires few tools and not much expense (depending on which lock you’re installing). If you have trouble with any part of an installation, you can always call a locksmith to help finish installing them.

Many local hardware stores have the equipment to copy basic keys at a low cost. Some locations may have freestanding machines where you can pick out a blank and insert it and your original key into the duplicating machine.

You may be able to get a broken key out of a lock by yourself, depending on the situation.
