"It went great! I got a call on Monday that the installation date would be Wednesday (2020-01-20)--that was quick! Dave and his crew did a great job!. He walked me through the work that was going to be done and listened to my concerns. They tore off the old roof and found the deck did not meet Owens Corning's requirements, as expected, so they put the new 7/16" OSB over the old 1" x 12" decking (+$7,000 to this 33 square job). They took extra care to put down ice and water guard in places that would be prone to leaks otherwise. They put on metal drip edge along the rakes (gable ends). I thought they would be white, but Dave told me Black would be much better, and I have to agree now. They used synthetic felt (U20 Rhino Roof) and a starter row for the shingles. They installed Owens Corning Duration shingles and the Sky Runner Ridge Vent. As Platinum Contractors, Owens Corning's highest rating, they followed all the installation instructions to ensure my warranty would be valid. They also installed new vents for my bathroom fans which was a great help as I cannot get to the places needed to do that work myself. Dave took pictures of the work and shared them with me so that we had documentation for the permit--check your local building code, roof permits are a new requirement in 2018 for my city and contractors do not always know this. The clean-up was pretty good, but I am sure I will find a few more nails when I start mowing the lawn in the spring. Overall, I was really impressed with the crew and their care for my house. If everything goes according to plan, this should be the last roof I ever put on this house. I know I did not get the cheapest price in town ($15,000 for 33 square, plus new decking above), but I got very good quality. My thanks go out to Dave and his team from James Elliott Roofing, the subcontractor on this job. If you need a new roof and you want a quality job, call James Elliott Roofing, or one of their contracting partners, like The Gutter Magicians (separate review coming once the new gutters are installed). P.S. I wish I could upload pictures so you could see the work, but I do not know how to do that on Angie's List."

Decorative Concrete questions, answered by experts

Natural ice melts can often get the job done without damaging concrete. You can try non-corrosive options such as kitty litter, alfalfa meal, coffee grounds, sugar beet juice, and heated snow-melting mats. While they may cause some staining, these natural melts are safe for concrete, pets, and the environment.

Yes, it's best to use a carbide-tipped masonry bit when drilling into concrete. These bits are harder and more durable than standard bits, so they're designed for drilling into tough surfaces like concrete. A different bit is likely to break and pose a safety hazard so you'll definitely want to stick with one that's specially designed for concrete.

One of the best base materials for a floating deck is a layer of gravel or compacted paver base to promote drainage and stability. Additionally, using concrete deck blocks or similar supports helps evenly distribute the weight and keep the structure level. These base materials help minimize moisture buildup, reducing shifting and rotting.

The main ingredients to make concrete are cement, water, air, and aggregate for proper formation. Mixing concrete occurs just before use to ensure proper curing after it is combined with water. Cement, however, is the key ingredient to concrete, and includes a collection of natural binding elements and sand, clay, and limestone.

Efflorescence can damage a concrete slab for two to three years. After that, it resolves on its own once the surrounding salts are gone.
