I've run Deep Rooted Woodworking for the last 7 years. I design and build custom cabinets and furniture, bedroom and living room sets. I take great pride in my work, everything is done using traditional joinery and is built to last generations.

"Work was of very poor quality. Communication was poor. Job was stopped due to lack of trust in contractor’s ability of willingness to correct issues. The job was planned for 8 weeks, incomplete after 8 months. Contractor did not order all required parts before starting. Used lower quality materials than specified in contract. Non matching materials were also used. Wainscoting panels were poorly assembled with large gaps and nail holes visible throughout the work. Some panels were fastened with a single nail into drywall, and kept in place with caulking and paint. Drywall compound was used instead of an appropriate wood filler. Filler was not sanded and visible through paint. Paint heavily applied resulting in drips, runs and heavy orange peel texture. Molding turn-ins not installed. Stain work roughly applied with runs and over staining throughout. Lost trust in contractor. Poor communication throughout. Job remains incomplete."

At MBL Contracting LLC we offer services ranging from gutter cleaning to new construction and additions. We are a Veteran owned and operated company. Our owners have been in the business for over 15 years and take pride in providing western NY with quality service.

"Wow... where do I begin? I'll start off by saying do NOT hire these guys! 1) Firstly, they are dishonest. When I was getting estimates, their salesman mentioned (twice) that if anyone for whom they had done work and referred us to them would get a $300 referral bonus. Greg, presumably one of the owners, also said this but they never paid the people that referred us and when I mentioned it, they outright LIED and said they don't have a referral program. 2) Also, be aware that it appears that they employ day laborers. This, in and of itself, isn't a significantly negative thing, but I SPECIFICALLY asked them if they have an established and trusted work crew and was told that they definitely do... but then I see quite a few different (and rather rough-looking) faces throughout the course of the job. 3) Another thing to note is that they are NOT bonded and in fact, their salesman did not even know what a bond is! Really? 4) And if a bigger job comes there way be prepared to be put on low priority. All throughout the job, there was a huge dumpster in our driveway and we had to park on the lawn. The job took A LOT longer than was estimated and there was an ENTIRE week when no one showed up at our house at all. Come to find out that they took on more than they could handle and left our siding job half done to work on a commercial project. 5) They also don't seem to account for how the weather might come into play during a job... they had taken off the old siding on the back of the house and didn't weatherproof the exposed areas. At around 4:30 AM I was roused from sleep by the sound of pouring water. There was a thunderstorm and it started pouring into my dining room! I had to go outside in the storm and tack up plastic sheeting to keep water from flooding our house! 6) They did not even finish the job! There were a couple items that STILL need to be addressed and Greg said that we'd be a priority and he would get his guys over to fix it ASAP.... well, that was LAST YEAR! 7) They did a less that stellar job. First, siding on south side of the house is starting to upend and come off and a whole length of siding on the back of the house completely fell off and now I have to hire someone to come over and fix it (and the rest of the job that refused to complete) because how on Earth can I trust MBL to come over and do it? 8) The estimate we received was to include Tyvek as well. When they were done pulling off the old siding on the North side of the house and were putting up the new siding, I saw that they were NOT putting up the Tyvek that WE PAID for. Only when I brought it to their attention did they put it up... and not even the proper way. I'm not an expert in home improvement and I found out later that MBL just slapped it up haphazardly. 9) This one may or may not have been their fault but the over $7k I paid them initially got double charged to my credit card. All in all, I can NOT recommend these guys! BEWARE! Do not make the same mistake I made!"

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

There are three primary ways to attach upper kitchen cabinets to a wall, and installers may use more than one method at a time. The most common method is to drive screws through the back of the cabinets and into studs in the wall behind. Sometimes cabinets are glued to the wall with strong adhesive. Often a combination of screws and adhesive is desirable. The last way is by hanging the cabinets on hardware brackets that attach to the wall before cabinet installation.

While you may have heard people use millwork and carpentry interchangeably, they aren’t the same. Millwork is a type of carpentry, which means that carpentry isn’t always millwork. You can tell millwork apart from other types of carpentry because it’s manufactured at a mill. Notably, casework is also confused with millwork. Casework is different because it refers to boxes like cabinets and bookshelves.

For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.

Ultimately, whether it’s better to hand paint or spray paint your cabinets comes down to preference. Spray painting provides a smooth finish that rarely needs touch-ups once it dries. On the other hand, hand painting comes with visible brush strokes and less uniformity. The difference is whether you prefer a sleek, clean look or a hand-finished, crafted look.

There is no official name for an open gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling. However, when that area is covered with a boxy shape to hide wires or pipes, this is known as a soffit. In some cases, this area may also be hidden with a bulkhead, a lower ceiling area that fits just above the cabinets.
