"George and his team were amazing! They set a very fair and competitive price but what we got was much better quality then other excavators we spoke to. The were smart about the excavation, thoughtful about doing the job in a way to yield the best long term results. They didn’t cut corners like i feared from other companies. I really was happy to trust them with the project and get their expert opinion and skill throughout. They are also an upstanding team of guys. I will be hiring them next year to clear my backyard. Really blown away with their service and can’t wait to see my land throughout the years."

"This is not the company that you want to plow your business parking lots. I attempted to discuss what spots needed to be done better and the driver wouldn't even stop to talk. All he did was yell from his truck cab that he didn't have the time and then attempted to hit me in the parking lot, telling me that I better move. I don't know but that seems like a form of vehicular assault to me...? They are a shabby landscaper as well. They cut corners and will even cut holes in your expensive garden hose with their weed wackers if you leave it out."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

While they’re popular and have a lot of pros, the cons of river rocks include the following:

  • River rocks don’t break down or provide nutrients to plants.

  • These stones can get hot and scorch nearby plants.

  • River stones may heat the surrounding soil to inhospitable temperatures.

  • Rocks can block rainwater from seeping into the ground if installations are too thick or tightly packed.

Most downsides occur when using river rock as mulch in gardens and flower beds. However, you can still incorporate river rocks into your landscape as long as you use them in the correct ways.

The cheapest landscape rock is gravel, pebbles, or decomposed granite. These small rocks are great for affordable driveways and walkways. If you’re looking for larger rocks as a building material, you can get fieldstone affordably, especially if sourced from somewhere in your area.

If a big freeze catches you by surprise and you don’t have any deicer to hand, you can reduce the chance of taking a tumble by laying gritty, anti-slip materials. Some natural, readily-available options that don’t melt ice but offer traction underfoot include sand, wood shavings, kitty litter, and fireplace ash.

No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.

Yes, rubber mulch allows water to seep through and reach the soil underneath. Rubber mulch is not as absorbent as organic mulch, which allows the soil underneath to stay moist and hydrated. Keep in mind that the permeability of rubber mulch can get clogged by landscape fabric and other additional materials.
