A swimming pool pump has to have water in it to run properly. If you put too much baking soda in your pool, your alkalinity will rise. That means you’ll need to take steps to lower your alkalinity. The average installation timeline for putting in an inground pool is between two and three weeks once the permits are approved, but that process can take an additional week or two. There are some things that can extend your timeline by days or even weeks, including ground preparation and excavation—especially if you have problematic soil—moving underground utility or sprinkler lines out of the way, installing the actual pool, and backfilling around the area. Additionally, many pool companies may have a waitlist due to high demand, meaning you could wait for months for the installation to be complete.

Ideally, you would run your pool pump as much as possible. But realistically, you should plan to run your pump strategically so you can save as much money as possible on your electricity bills while also keeping your pool clean.

Most pool owners run their pumps for eight to 12 hours a day—not necessarily consecutively. You can opt to run the pump during non-peak hours when electricity is cheaper, which is usually in the evenings and nighttime.

You should wait at least six hours after adding baking soda before swimming in your pool. Even better, wait at least 24 hours to ensure it’s fully mixed in and dissolved. While it’s likely not harmful, if you get in the pool too early, the baking soda may irritate your skin or eyes if you’re sensitive to it.
