Specifically, if you use a PSI that's too powerful, you may permanently damage a fence. Pressure washers can also remove paint from fences, though this can be a great thing if you’re looking to restore an old wood fence.

A pressure washer is okay to use on epoxy floors and won’t remove the concrete coating if you use a lower pressure setting and the correct nozzle, such as a green, white, or black nozzle, for gentle cleaning. Be careful using a power washer, which adds heat to the pressurized water, because this may be too powerful and could damage the epoxy.

One of the most important factors to consider when buying a pressure washer is not just psi but also the machine’s overall cleaning power. This is based on both the psi and the GPM. Look for a cleaning rating, or effective cleaning unit (ECU), of up to 8,000 for most residential cleaning projects that require a pressure washer.

A good psi for a general-use pressure washer is 2,000 to 3,000 psi. Some surfaces will require a softer touch, such as a cedar deck, which should be washed at the lowest setting, but heavier-duty jobs like removing stubborn stains from your driveway will need pressure at the higher end.

While some pressure washers, when used at lower settings, are ok to use on tires, we suggest proceeding with caution. While the high pressure alone won’t cause damage to your tires, pressure washers emit high-frequency pulsations that can damage the tires’ sidewall cords. Using a medium-bristle brush and soapy water is a better bet if you want to keep your tires in tip-top shape.
