Sometimes you can get away with simply sanding and painting over small areas of peeling paint. However, the problem will likely return quickly, and the ridge between old and new paint will be visible. You can start by using a brush to cut in the edges and fill in the gaps and finer grooves of the wood. Then, you can go back over the entire space with a roller to ensure an even, smooth finish.
