Most homeowners can remain in their homes during stucco removal, but expect noise, dust, and limited access to certain areas. The easiest way to remove stucco is to use a circular saw with a diamond blade to cut small squares out, pry them off, and then cut the metal lath behind it with tin snips. It’s possible to do everything with a hammer and a crowbar, but it will take significantly longer and will wear you out more quickly. Plus, you’ll have a higher risk of damaging windows, hidden siding, and sheathing if you go the less precise route.

You can apply stucco to wood by wrapping it with grade D waterproof paper, installing trim accessories such as metal lath, control joints, weep screeds, casing beads, and expansion joints, and applying the stucco in three layers. You’ll need a scratch coat, brown coat, and finish coat, all applied with a trowel and screeded with a darby or straight edge. Each should cure for two days before you apply the next one.

Many general contractors can handle adding stucco siding, but it’s best to hire a local stucco contractor as you’re more likely to get a clean finish on your stucco siding that maximizes curb appeal. Stucco can be a challenging material to work with, so hiring a professional contractor who has years of experience and specializes in stucco application is advisable.
