"Overall, it went pretty well. I took a while to decide on which of the colours and edging I wanted; they did a good job of following up and reminding me. Since this work is for a house I'm renting, I wasn't always able to get measurements quickly. There were some quirks. The Big Deal price doesn't include removal and disposal of the old countertop; that was an additional $300. It also doesn't include the re-attachment of the sink as they don't do that work so I needed to get a plumber involved. To be fair, both of these were disclosed in the Big Deal and by them afterwards. Since this is template-based, I went out to the house and met an installer who created the template. He worked quickly but, unfortunately, his English was rather limited and several times during the entire project, he had to call their main office and hand me the phone so I could talk to someone there instead. This slowed down the process and made the interactions feel clumsy. On a positive note, they do care about the work; I had decided on 1/4" bevel edging and the main office called back and said that that edging has a higher risk of chipping and, since this is a rental, I should go with the 3/8" round instead, which I did. Since I was reusing my old sink, they brought the slab in and cut the hole for it on-site but used a vacuum and cleaned up the dust quite well. They also lowered the slide-in sink since the new countertop are thinner than the old one. This was after yet another back-and-forth conversation that resulted in a phone call to the main office so they could tell me they would do the work but wouldn't be liable for any resulting damage; there was none. The result looks good and once I get the sink re-attached, all will be well. There are still a couple of minor issues but it is a worthwhile upgrade."

"We came home from vacation to very stormy weather.  We found that our garage wall and top corner of the ceiling where the garage meets the house was WET.  We looked for someone on Angie's List to provide us with an estimate on repairing whatever damage might be up there causing this problem.  Due to three top-notch reviews, we called T&T Construction on a Friday.  David Turner (owner) answered my call and we agreed that he would come out at 10:00 Monday morning to take a look at the roof/siding.  Mr. Turner was punctual and got straight to business taking apart our siding trying to figure out what was causing our problem.  He told me that if for some reason he couldn't find the problem, that he would put everything back the way it was before proceeding.  We did, in fact, have what appeared to be hail damage to our siding and roofing. Mr. Turner gave us several options for how he could proceed with the work and an estimate.  We agreed on the estimate and, much to my surprise, Mr. Turner said he and the one man crew he had with him could get the house repaired by that evening.  My husband inspected the roof and siding upon completion and was satisfied that they had done exactly what they had indicated in their estimate.  Mr. Turner worked neatly during the job and cleaned up his equipment and other scraps VERY well after the job was done.  At the end of his work, he even offered to clean fingerprints left on the new siding during installation.  Upon request, he also attempted to fix a siding problem in the back of our home after the roofing job was completed, but not having any additional siding material, he was unable to correct the problem.  He DID put everything back in place as it was. My husband and I were very pleased with his professionalism and work ethic and would be happy to recommend him and use his services again in the future.

"I could not recommend Harold's Enterprises more highly. I reached out to Harold based on his listing on Angie's List before I bought my home--free of charge, he took a look at the roof on a property I was considering buying--giving me an estimate and advice. His help led me to find that the sellers were dishonest about the condition of and work done on their roof, and I purchased a different property in Hudson, NY. My home is a 1927 Craftsman that needed quite a bit of work. I hired Harold based on his honesty and responsiveness in helping me evaluate the first property. True to form, his estimate and ultimate cost to repaint the entire interior, repair and sheetrock floors and ceilings, refinish and replace hardwood floors, completely remodel a bathroom, rewire and install light fixtures, match original woodworking, install cabinetry, windows, and appliances, and even assist with installing new furniture, were more than reasonable. Better yet, the quality of his work was of the highest caliber. He has restored and improved a lovely home, and I am so thankful! I have to say that most of all, I am so happy with Harold's professionalism and diligence. Not every contractor is known for staying on the job and completing it on time. Especially in my situation, where I am a single woman trying to restore a second home when I live out of state--I assumed I would have difficulty in getting any contractor to be present and complete the job on time. However, this was never a problem. Harold was always there, was immediately responsive, and never slacked off when I wasn't there. "Fair, honest & reliable. We called on a Sunday evening about our broken disposal. They called us back early Monday morning and came that afternoon. Turns out the disposal was clogged and just needed to be cleaned out. We were very happy with the punctuality and service. Only issue was when I saw the bill I was surprised the total came to over $140 dollars, which was only for labor which they charge $88/hour. The man was here about 20-30 minutes but the bill said 1.5 hours. I called to inquire about the bill and found out they charge for driving distance. Michael told me that someone should have let me know that ahead of time and I agreed. We agreed on $115 total. I am happy with that."

After the first winter in my recently purchased 1870's vintage house, it was clear that the patchworked heating system, aging and inefficient, was a big problem.  Upstairs had circulating hot water, poorly installed.  Downstairs had old electric baseboards.  There are no ducts anywhere in the house.  What to do?  Call experts!  Several 'experts' then made proposals that fell short in a variety of ways.  
I met Matthew and Karlene Gucker, the owners of North Country PHC, at a home show.  They listened and told me they very much wanted an opportunity to make a proposal.  They followed up in writing to underscore their interest in my job.  As I had liked them immediately, I made an appointment and hoped they would deliver a quality proposal.  
Matthew arrived at the appointed time, toured my house, listened carefully to my goals, took his time and made careful notes.  Before departing, he told me in detail how he would address the problems I had identified, showed me some problems I had not seen with my inexperienced eye, and explained how he would address all my goals for this big job.  He even significantly reduced the cost of the job by salvaging the hot water circulating system by correcting the offending plumbing problems in its installation.  His was, by far, the best response I had received.  
He quickly followed up with a detailed written proposal that outlined the work, the equipment, the time frame and a meaningful breakdown of the costs.  
North Country removed one decrepit boiler and two very old gas water heaters.  In their place, I received one modern energy efficient combination boiler that heats the entire house, as well as provides potable hot water.  The upstairs hot water circulating system now works perfectly.  The old, offending plumbing that held it together is gone and new, properly installed plumbing has  it all working like a dream.  Downstairs, the house is heated by a radiant system that was readily installed from the basement.  The house is warm.  The boiler is silent and costs less than its predecessor to operate.  I have all the hot water I can use.  Mission Accomplished!
During the installation, one of the company's crew members was hospitalized.  No one could reasonably foresee this would happen.  Matthew and Karlene immediately informed me and ensured that it created no greater delay in my job than was absolutely unavoidable.  The communication from them both was excellent and the inconvenience to me was almost non-existent. They made sure I was never without heat or hot water.  The entire delay lasted no more than a few days.  For me, it amounted to no problem at all, but only because of the pro-active response from Matthew and Karlene.  This could happen to any employer at any time, but not all of them would handle it as well as North Country did.  Their attentiveness to the matter was excellent and much appreciated.
I always felt I was in good hands during this large job. My confidence never wavered that I was getting a great result.  I was rarely without heat or hot water, and then only for a matter of a few hours when essential, relevant work was being performed.  
I subsequently had other contractors in the house to perform some work unrelated to the heating upgrade.  I had to nudge them away from their enthusiastic examination of the work Matthew had done.  They were greatly impressed.  When the inspector from the local department of buildings came to review the finished work, he was also most enthusiastic about it.  He told me, "I never see work this good.  You got great work done here."  
Matthew has been back twice, at no cost to me, to check the work and make some small adjustments.  I don't know how this job could have been better.  Thank you, Matthew.  Thank you, Karlene.

"AHS is ok. They cover repairs of most everything under the roof of your house. The companies that contract with them are not always the best. You call AHS with the issue, they send a fax to the repair company and give you the contact info. If they don't contact you within 24 hours, you call them. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. When they arrive (usually three days or so later), they service the item. if it has issues within the 90 days, you call AHS again, they are sent out with no charge. If the serviceman decides the unit is unrepairable, AHS will allow you to choose a replacement from their listing (usually not as good as what you have) they will install and remove your old item, or give you wholesale amount to buy and install your own. Prices vary on what you want covered and what you want the copay to be, plus where you live. For me it is 49.99 per month with a 75.00 time of service order. You can have more than one item serviced at the same time under the same fee. If you have a SEAR product the repair guys are great. Not that wild about the other ones they send out. But it is a big savings compared to calling someone on your own. The cost of service is only the 75.00 copay."
